Optimism
When Daedalt doesn’t show his large grinning mouth, he has no mouth.
I’m planning to paint this either in watercolours or gouache.
I’ve been sketching a lot about my struggles to work on my well being despite being generally a cynical and not very hopeful person. As well as the stream of consciousness that goes along with having this on the mind so much. I decided to start sharing some of it on Comic Fury. You can read it here
Over the Influence just updated (mature comic)
Updates on my comics
Over the influence
Still my main comic, should update again in January. I’m trying to find a balance with producing this comic in a timely manner while working a full time job. I’m looking in ways to streamline the process without lowering the quality too much. I feel like if I lower it any more, the pages will look half assed.
The Ochre Hall
Having serious doubts about the future of this one. There are chapters in the novel form that I don't think I can adapt in the comic without big worries. When I write something purely for myself, I do things differently than something I present to an audience. Those differences are accentuated in comic form because even more of my intention can be lost by drawing if the expressions and storytelling doesn’t match what is in my mind. There is especially one chapter that I feel is problematic, but it’s also pivotal in the story. If I take it out, I need to replace it with something else. Considering I have difficulties updating my main comic regularly, I don’t want to put too much energy on this side project for the moment.
New project?
There’s a dream related comic project I’ve been wanting to do for a long time, but I’ve kept putting it off because I didn’t feel I had much time for it. And I probably don’t. However, I’m feeling more drive and desire towards this project than most other ones and in this bleak time of pandemic, a bit of passion goes a long way. It would be drawn in a very loose and sketchy style and would be an “update whenever” thing. I don’t want to say too much, especially since I still don’t know if I’ll take the plunge, but it would be dream related.
I made a new design inspired by my cat. On the first days I had her, she only felt comfortable moving around in the dark, so it felt like I was living with a tiny vampire cloud. You can get that design on all kinds of products here.
There is a white cat version as well.
And more designs from me here.
Random demon thoughts in my head
#I can never remember how I tag this fucking story
1) Beatrice Bee is a really smart academic type, but she fangirls over all types of stories, from Pride and Prejudice to the Twilight Saga. She completely unironically likes Twilight.
2) Former the vampire is a huge snob about his nerdiness and really obviously looks down on Bee for her Twilight love. But they're friends because Bee has every episode of Dr. Who on her computer and Former doesn't know how to torrent things. Also he doesn't own a computer.
3) Because of her . . . eclectic tastes, Former doesn't trust anything Bee recommends to him. But she does manage to get him horribly addicted to Sherlock.
4) Bee blackmails Former into doing her bidding by witholding the second season of Sherlock. Former doesn't know how to look up spoilers on the Internet.
5) Former doesn't want to be labeled as the Gay Best Friend character. But without Bee . . . he isn't ANYONE's best friend :( :( :( :(
6) One of the reasons Former hates Twilight is because he actually has a Gay Vampire Cousin named Edward who is perfect. He owns a perfect overpriced hipster bar that Former hates but goes to anyway because their organic blood kale smoothies are (GOD DAMMIT) SO GOOD.
7) Former can't drive so he rides a bike everywhere. He is stubbornly proud of that bike. "VAMPIRE ON A BICYCLE. BET YOU DIDN'T EXPECT TO SEE THAT TODAY. WELL, HA."
Demontales, inciting incident!
[previous set ups: Beatrice Bee is the unofficial bouncer at her sorority. Recently, a friend of hers has been harassed by an ex-boyfriend, and Bee has been periodically shooing him away while she hides from him. In an unrelated bit of exposition, Bee has been receiving a steady stream of mail from her student loan agency filled with endless fine print, but she has been swamped enough with work and school that she has let them pile up unread.]
Bee is going over her mail one evening when her friend runs in, panicking. She is convinced that her ex is stalking her, and her paranoia seems justified when a pebble raps against the window. Bee shouts at him and, for the moment, there is silence outside.
She returns to her mail, scrunching up her nose in distaste as she comes across the letters from the loan agency again. Her friend is halfway through asking her what the matter is when another pebble hits the window. Bee tries to ignore it, but the noise outside persists and grows louder until she has no choice but to get aggressive.
She storms over to the door and opens it, ready to bitch the ex out . . . only, it isn’t him after all. Standing at the bottom of the stairs are two huge, strange-looking men she has never seen before. Their eyes glow red and fire pours from their grinning mouths. They seem to have horns of some sort. But Bee has no time to make anything of this because the instant they see her, they rush at her lightning fast.
Bee slams the door shut but can’t hold it for long. She dashes into her bedroom as they crash through the door, then quickly dashes through the bathroom as they pursue her. The men eventually corner her, but not before trashing her room almost beyond recognition. Bee tries to fight them off, but freezes when she notices one of them pulling something from his pocket. To her relief, the man doesn’t have a gun but rather a calling card, one with the same logo as her letters from the loan agency. He lets the card flutter down to land on Bee’s nose and tell her that this (er, the wreckage, not the card) is just a taste of what will come if she doesn’t “pay up.”
Before she can recover, a fiery pit opens up in the floor and the men descend down into it. The disappears almost instantly, leaving nothing but an enormous mess and a wrecked floor which seems to have been sucked down into the earth. Bee’s friend peers out from behind the sofa and meekly asks what that was all about. Bee isn’t sure herself, but she stares at the card anxiously. She makes her way wobbly to her mail and picks up one of the envelopes from her student loans. Could those two freaks have been some kind of debt collectors? And if so, what the hell was in all that fine print that she had missed?
[I think I have a bad habit of running out of steam in my writing before I get to the real “meat” of a scene—in this case the rough-housing action sequence. I also need to think through some of the logic of their attack more.]
