Sam couldn't believe it. His mind was still reeling and the fight or flight adrenaline kick in his brain was screaming at him to do something but he didn't move. He stood still as Gabriel placed the little bundle in his arms. It was almost as if Gabriel was trying to make sure he stayed, or trying to make him believe he was telling the truth.
Gabriel had shown up barely five minutes ago, after being gone for years. After taking on Lucifer and being killed both of them had been sure they'd never see each other again. Sam had dropped his book to the floor and pulled his knife, thinking Gabriel wasn't real until the angel had clutched the bundle in his arms to his chest and begged Sam to believe him.
"I don't know what happened," he had said, "I was sure I was dead when he stabbed me, Luci had always been thorough about everything. But I woke up. I wasn't supposed to wake up. I always assumed angels just disappeared when they were killed, but when I opened my eyes I was in some empty cabin in Norway. I couldn't leave. I tried. I found out it had been years since I was killed. Just a few months ago." Sam hadn't believed him, had bit his lip and fought back the urge to believe him, because Gabriel had been gone for so long. "A few days later I realized why my Father hadn't let me die," he used one hand to uncurl the blanket in his arms and Sam had choked when he noticed the bundle had been breathing, sleeping, the whole time. "She's yours, you know?"
So, standing there looking down at the honey-eyed baby in his arms Sam started to believe it. The light patch of hair on her head matched the color of his own, "How are you here now?" Sam didn't look away from the baby, but he needed to know. He heard Gabriel huff a quiet laugh beside him.
"Dad has a sense of humor. As soon as she was born, he lifted the wards from the place. I don't know why he wouldn't let me leave before then, maybe," Gabriel coughed to clear his throat, "maybe he was just making sure we were safe."
Sam nodded and used one of his hands to trace the outline of the girl's cheek. A small hand came up and wrapped around his finger and he gasped silently at her strength. "How old is she Gabe?" She looked at least a few months old, but he couldn't be sure.
"She's only two weeks old," Sam could hear the smile in Gabriel's tone and sure enough, the angel was smiling fondly at him when he looked up, "It took me a while to realize we weren't trapped there anymore. And she's nephilim Sam, she'll age differently. Aren't you going to ask her name?"
Sam shook his head but he smiled, "What's her name?"
"Ayah," Gabriel looked smug as he tucked his hands in his pockets, the hunter snorted.
"Of course," Sam smiled as his daughter yawned and attempted to return to her nap, "our little miracle."
