The Vor Game by Lois McMaster Bujold
This time out, Mile Vorkosigan is twenty years old and ready to take his place on the bottom rung of the Barrayaran military. The first chapter opens with Miles and his academy chums waiting in line for their first assignments. Miles’ assignment: weather man for a polar training base. As anyone familiar with Miles should know by now, things rapidly get out of hand.
Miles’ second assignment goes so much farther out of hand, it takes the rest of the book to clean up. This second Miles Vorkosigan story relies much less heavily on coincidence than the previous one. Nearly all of the “crazy random happenstance” is directly set up in advance within the text. Some of the cause and effect involves pretty wild chains to link up, but the chains are there.
Because we only directly see into Miles’ head, some of the extras seem somewhat flat. Characters that stick around longer do tend to acquire a measure of depth.
