Excerpt of an active WIP, as a treat

A sneak peak at my Bel/Oliver fic as a special treat for the LMB Discord server weirdos and also all my mutuals here.

“What’s a nice Barrayaran boy like you doing in a place like this?”

The query spoken so close to his ear startles Captain Jole. Not because of the proximity – he easily clocked the figure doggedly traversing the crowded bar in his direction – but because the accented alto voice sounds eerily familiar. A wave of homesickness crashes over him. He turns to face the speaker if only to dispel the emotion, along with the illusion that this is anyone but a stranger.

The Betan bestows on him a beatific smile, tinged with just a hint of apprehension. The expression is ridiculously appealing for all Oliver still isn’t quite sure what gender person is addressing him. The face before him might belong to either a beautiful man or a strong-featured woman. He can hardly mistake the intent of the words, or that Look, however.

In Oliver’s experience, despondency is a terrible reason to allow oneself to be picked up in a tavern. Especially halfway across the galaxy from home, when one’s comrades do not actually know one’s location. But he’s fallen into bed with sexy strangers for far worse reasons, and under far less secure circumstances, so he decides he will not brush off this uninvited guest. Not yet anyway.

The Betan’s initial self-assurance is slipping as Oliver fails to respond, so he awards his admirer a mildly flirty smile.

“That,” he remarks in a light, teasing tone, “was without doubt the worst pick up line I have ever heard.” He tilts his head inquisitively. “Does it even work?”

The Betan’s smile broadens again, and the slim body inches closer to Oliver’s. He allows the invasion of his personal space.

“You tell me,” murmurs the Betan.

An artificial floral scent wafts from his would-be seducer. It shakes loose a memory from one of those Betan conversations Oliver’s had with the Countess. And he knows in that moment what manner of person is hitting on him.

A herm. How… interesting.

Culturally speaking, he ought to be repulsed; gengineered persons are mutants by Barrayaran sensibilities. Oliver examines his reaction and finds his revulsion quotient is nonexistent. He breathes a little prayer of thanks to his absent metamour.

He studies the herm more closely: older than he first calculated – with something of the same heartsickness in those deep brown eyes that drove Oliver to this bar – but then, Oliver likes older lovers. And, apparently, ones with emotional baggage. He can hear Cordelia laughing in his head.

Well, why not? he mentally answers that lilting laugh. He took a big chance, throwing himself at Aral. That worked out… well. Mostly. Still… Why the hell not?

“So,” he says aloud, voice low and deliberately suggestive, “what’s a nice herm like you doing in a dive bar on Pol, then?”

That surprises a fleeting, ecstatic grin, quickly staunched. The herm’s eyes narrow and its lips twist into a wry smirk. “I am not nice,” it says in a tone to match Oliver’s. “But I am here for the very same reason you are.”

Oliver hums an encouraging affirmative, though that is not, in fact, what he was here for tonight. He intended to drown his sorrows in anonymity, hence this very out-of-the-way tavern in a section of town unlikely to draw his men or the Komarran ship folk. But the Betan has presented him with an opportunity far more appealing.

Daringly, he takes one of the Betan’s white hands in his best Prime Minister’s aide charming a female dignitary style. “I’m Oliver.”

“Bel.” The smirk deepens. “Is this how Barrayarans greet all strangers?”

“Only the bold and lovely ones.”

“Hmm, flattery will get you everywhere, Oliver.” Bel retrieves its hand only to run a forefinger lightly down his cheek and jaw. “Including my bed.”

Well, now!

Oliver leans into the touch, and with just a hint of challenge, asks: “Is it close by?”

it's Vorkosigan kink meme time

hello fellow Vorkosigan fans! I know there are only about twelve of us active on here, but I think it would be fun to do a kink meme fanfic and art prompt challenge. Of course, we don't have an old LiveJournal style anonymous comment section to work with, but I have a way to do it using tumblr and ao3.

I will make a sideblog for the kink meme and use it to collect prompts--this will make it easy to collect prompts anonymously. I will collect them into an easy-to-find pinned post.

I will also make a collection on ao3, where responses to the prompts are submitted. This collection would be anonymous by default, but if you submit something and want your username attached to it, I will provide an email in the description so that you can notify me and I will de-anon it.

I just think it would be fun to collect a bunch of prompts--not necessarily only kink, there are many under-explored parts of canon--and see what fic and art result from them.
