Fantastic voicey character writing as usual from CB, very cool and unique premise for a fantasy world, and an absolutely delightful protagonist. The world is dark and the protagonist is constantly eating shit, yet I’m grinning ear to ear every page. It’s just that much of a blast to experience the story as told through Kinch’s distractible and entertaining anecdotes. 10/10 very fun read!

Nth - Spiderlight

Did some sketches tonight trying to imagine nth from Adrien Tchaikovsky’s Spiderlight . (It’s a banger of a book that deserves more hype)

Creation notes

- from nth’s initial description, I believe he has two large main eyes, two little forehead eyes, and maybe some other little eyes thrown in

- his mouth should have two extra long needle fangs (with slots in lower jaw). — I wound up doing one (middle) version of him where he had human skin flap analogs for spider mouth parts, which turned out interesting, but isn’t technically cannon 🥲

- nth lying down in bed on the morning before fighting the demon lord: Cyrene describes his back as being leanly muscled, but all the muscles being in slightly the wrong place for a human anatomy. I wound up using a greyhound as reference, but it turned out a little janky.

Like, the illustrator went “yes, yes absolutely, love it, I think I’m gonna draw him next to his hot wife just looking so OLD and BUSTED with notes of terminal jaundice.

The lighting? I’m thinking something fun and dramatic to really bring out every wrinkle. Nah that’s not enough lemme add in some reflected light to really make them wrinkles have that extra unnatural shine, I wanna make him look like he might be covered in gold paint. Ekaterin’s skin should be flawless and airbrushed wrinkle free though.

Ooo and then for his hair I’m just gonna make it an absolute fuckin mess! I think I can really sell it by using that lighting to highlight every stray strand and split end. God what a masterpiece.”

I love the Vorkosigan Saga so so so much but it has some of the most hideous covers, especially on audible, it actually gives me the giggles. Big ahh disembodied floating head treatment every time (ooo wow so 90s sci fi!).

They even do him dirty compared to other characters in the series! Like when Ivan gets his own little romance arc he gets to be chilling on a couch smugly sipping wine surrounded by scantily clad babes in silly poses! And Cordelia! Every cover she’s in the artist gives her the absolute baddy queen treatment and she looks so cool and powerful and kickass.

But miles? Old and busted with the big floating heads and random Vulcan eyebrows. The artists really took his negative self image to heart and said let’s make the audience see you the way you see you 😭.

Gregor and Miles, with Miles behind on a high ground of some sorts so that the artist conveniently didn't have to think about his anatomy? Creation notes:

- finished the linework and got really worried I’d fuck it up when I painted it so I made a photocopy and painted that instead of the original copy which was drawn on watercolor paper… unfortunately printer paper is not the greatest paint absorber so apologies for the lumpiness.

- also idk I messed up drawing byerly’s outfit. The shirts details are pretty but a little off from what I was going for and somehow during painting the pants now look like harem pants. (Outfit was supposed to be an attempt at a barrayaran folk-style suit/vest with a cut blending early 1800s suit silhouettes with open sleeve folk shirts. It didn’t quite work out.)

Obviously the mans gonna be a little grumpy, the guys got worms in his tummy!

(artist note: The number of anime girls eating ramen I sifted through to find the right pose reference for this stupid drawing was simply untenable. Turns out writhing masses of worms/noodles are extremely tedious to sketch but pretty fun to render! I got really tired of the project about 75% of the way through, so I gave up on drawing a background and lifted directly from the game. Shoutout to Miro Haverinen, creator of funger, and also its illustrator. What a cool spooky artstyle!)

Creator’s Note: I made some more incredibly niche crossover content! Three of my favorite fictional robots/AI hanging out. This scene popped into my head when I was rereading the scene in artificial condition where ART was afraid to watch certain shows with secunit because it would get too upset if the ship cremembers in the show were endangered. (Probably the cutest moment in the whole series TBH, and definitely the moment I became 1000% on board with ART as a character.) I had a lot of fun imagining the characters reactions and trying to pick out what they should watch for their pajama movie night (obviously it had to be a musical for breq, and include space ships for ART).
