Definitive Guide to Modeling (Role Modeling that is...)
Last post was about selecting a model, so this one will be about doing your research and staring at them. “The Talent Code” author Daniel Coyle mentions staring at those you aspire to be like. So let’s stare and stare hard. o.O
Digging in. To dig in you want to pull up as many leading resources as possible. Let’s explore what I mean by leading resource. We are talking search engines, MeetUp Group, seminars, magazines, communities, Facebook, Pinterest; another name for these could be custodians. What custodians will give you maximum exposure to you role model?
So you have selected a custodian or a handful that are going to give you maximum exposure to your role model. Now what to search for. Honestly! Anything! If you want to model someone, all aspects of their life are applicable. The way they wake up, the way they interact with their families, how they manage finances, the operating system they manage their life through, what they focus on, their rituals, how they speak, how they think, and how they exist in their body. You can go as wide as you want here. I would say the balancing act is figuring out what the most effective characteristics are you can mimic to improve your life. Get a list of character traits.
Determine your result! Figure out exactly what it is you are going for when you are modeling this extraordinary person. Ask yourself, what do you wish you were doing like them? Who do you want to become while studying them? This is so so important. You have to know what your goal is. You can’t define this enough. I define my goals weekly, sometimes they change that often. Though in slight adjustments. Weekly, you may want to look at this.
Give yourself a good day of researching their take on them. If you need more specifics, partition that day in equal time segments to develop the traits. Treat each like an intellectual sprint. You’ll have to take all these as your resources, something to refer back to. I take my computer out and start typing. You may get a notebook out and start writing. You may write and then type it to get it further engrained in your body. Either way get it somewhere that you will look at daily. Often I write something down and don’t ever look at it again. It’s our jobs as masters of our minds to recognize these patterns and adjust our initial intellectual investments in a way that will come to a gain.
Well you’ve done the research, you have your knowledge, you have your person, now what? Set yourself a schedule. Young adults become masters of nuclear power every 6 months by becoming completely immersed in the material. Lucky for you this is only one course. Remember the end result! It may seem like a ways out, but if you dedicate 1-2 hours a day for a month at a time, you can truly master a skill set. Have I scheduled this and set my body up to respond to my schedule? How do you set your body up? For me it’s an alarm. Pick something to break your pattern. Something to throw yourself off and ensure that you will be wiped out of whatever you are doing to practice this new skill or study this person. Form your own pattern interrupts. Key key concept here!
That’s all for today folks!
Stay extraordinary,
Tristan
