Primal movement experiment. Empty studio, will play.
I know I haven’t been around much lately, but I’ve been taking a mental health break from the net, for the most part. Obviously I still do some posting on Instagram and the like, but I’ve been mostly ignoring social media for a while to focus on other things.
That being said, I have a NSV to share. I can do a flat-footed squat now! Only for a few minutes before I start to fall backwards, but I now don’t have to hold onto something for dear life. I’ve been working on stretching and strengthening my ankles to help me get down to and hold a “third world squat,” and it’s paying off.
I also found one of those primal movement sites that’s been very helpful, AND on top of that, Mister sits in a squat a lot of the time, even in chairs, so he was willing to demonstrate how he does it and look at my form to see where I might be messing up. Mister never had to hear that pernicious phrase, “sit like a lady!”

5 Primal Movements you NEED to do
remember how you moved as a kid?
i just finished listening to an incredibly long podcast on natural movement.
so now i'm online - since i was listening while taking a barefoot walk with my dog in the pouring rain last night, and again today while waiting for laundry - looking up information about movnat. and what i'm seeing are Adults Moving The Way I Move, and The Way I Moved As A Kid. the best part is that i'm sure looking into this methodology will help correct Unhealthy postures and movement styles i've got, while strengthening what i already do that's great. not that i can afford to Officially make use of their services - but i’ll glean what i can from free, brief videos.
it's wonderful to see videos of other adults carrying logs around, swapping them from shoulder to shoulder, crossing creeks, hopping up into trees. i see myself in most of the actions portrayed in these videos, though in the everday scenes and needs of my off-grid life. i spent quite a bit of time last summer in an upside-down-crawl working on the floor of our cabin from underneath. i monkey my way up onto the deck of our boat, and across and over cluttered surfaces, all the time. i regularly forego ladders when i could instead just grab something overhead and hoist myself up. i've spent the past decade felling trees and hauling logs on my shoulder in All terrain, to keep myself warm. for the record: I Love Carrying Logs. i'm also almost always wearing 'inappropriate footwear' for the tasks at hand, and have gotten used to staying loose and shifting my body weight so that i can walk on ice, scree, gravel, muddy slopes, and all kinds of other non-ideal surfaces. and, like any berry-loving animal, i know just how to crouch-and-slide under and around prickly berry canes to get at the tastiest fruits.
i'd love to hear from anyone else who's either using movnat as a practice, or who uses these kinds of movements in their everyday life. do you move the way you want to? do you get to do it enough? do you feel you're doing it in a healthy way that prevents injury? what are some of the biggest challenges for you? your favorite movements? do you still climb trees?
<3 (Edit: I removed Daniel Vitalis’ name from this post, as I’m not interested in supporting his work. After a decade of incredibly minimal internet access, at the time of writing this post I had just begun to have full, 24/7 access to the internet again, and only listened to 3 or so podcasts from ‘ReWild Yourself’ with DV before coming across posts online from other rewilders denouncing his plagiarism, sexism, and complicit racism. I won’t be listening to his podcasts in the future, though the content and sentiment of this post still holds true. 12/7/17)
Crawl before you can run?
Crawl before you can run?
I’ve become too familiar with talk about poo –Talk of consistency, frequency, buoyancy, colour and laxatives has become the norm. Being the father of two young children and the son of two aging, but thankfully healthy parents, the subject of poo, bottoms and constipation is voluntarily and far too frequently discussed over dinner. I’d be about to raise a steamed green bean to my mouth, only to…
