Rule 5: Only participate if you want to; no pressure.
1. How do you take your tea or coffee?
English breakfast tea, I will drink black but I like with milk and a little sugar. Peppermint tea, I drink by the gallon with honey when I’m sick. Iced tea, I like unsweet. Coffee, I drink with milk (I prefer it to cream) and sugar.
2. Nyota Uhura, Mako Mori, Maria Hill, Kate Freelander, and Teyla Emmagan are having a drink together. Describe what happens next.
Uh…I google Kate Freelander to find out who she is? Oh! She’s on Sanctuary, which I have yet to watch. (I presume she’s as kickass as the other three, and they all talk about how great it is to be so amazingly awesome.)
3. Make me a cocktail. Why did you pick this cocktail?
I make you a Brendarita, which is a margarita according to my friend Brenda’s recipe, because it’s delicious and it’s the only drink I know how to make. (Rub a lime section over the rim of a glass and dip it in kosher or cocktail salt. Fill the glass with ice and two or three hulled strawberries. Squeeze the juice from the lime section into the glass, add 1-2 shots of GOOD tequila, and fill the glass with fresh-squeezed grapefruit juice. When you’re done with the drink, don’t forget to fish out the booze-soaked strawberries and eat those too.)
4. Favourite fictional female character?
Scout Finch. Veronica Mars. Aeryn Sun. Leia Organa. Reagan from Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl. CJ Cregg. Minerva McGonagall.
5. You have twenty-four hours to do anything you like. Money, capability, and social censure are no object. What do you do?
Hm. Most of the things that come to mind involve traveling a long distance, and I’d want more than 24 hours to do those things. Oh, how about, I’d like to go to New York first class, stay at the best hotel, eat at the best restaurants, and go see a Broadway show. (That’ll only work for the next couple of weeks, though, till I move to Japan. Then it’d be too far to travel in 24 hours.)
6. Cat or dog person?
I like both, but if forced to choose, I would pick cats.
7. The nicest thing that anyone’s ever said to you.
“I think it would be awesome to have a family with you.” (Said to me by my husband, before we were engaged.)
8. What’s your superpower?
Knowing when a timer is about to go off. When I’m cooking, I usually walk into the kitchen to check on the food within seconds of the timer going off.
9. Three women you’d like to meet (death, distance, disposition no object).
My great-grandma Maggie Baker. She had Alzheimer’s at the end of her life, and died when I was very young. I remember her, but I never really knew her, and from the stories I’ve heard about her she was quite a strong, interesting woman. Jo Rowling. Obviously. Amanda Tapping. The more I learn about her, the more wonderful and smart and good-hearted she seems. I think I’d really like her a lot.
10. Make a sandwich (edible) out of anything you like: What kind of bread do you use? What fillings?
It kind of depends what I’m hungry for, doesn’t it? I’d probably either make a bacon, fried egg, spinach and avocado sandwich on a toasted everything bagel, or…a tuna melt on whole wheat, with my homemade tuna salad and sharp cheddar. (I make tuna salad with plain Greek yogurt, mashed avocado, mustard, minced onion and celery, finely-grated carrot, and minced dill pickles or sweet pickle relish.)
11. Is it sad that I had to qualify the “edible” part when I mentioned a sandwich in the previous question? Why/why not?
Nah. Tumblrites have active imaginations, that’s all. ;-)
Those were Sel’s questions, and good ones they were too. Thanks, Sel! On to Jenn’s questions.
01. What was your favorite childhood activity?
Reading, reading and more reading. After reading, I liked drawing.
02. Any pets? If so, what kind?
Yes, we have one cat, a tortoiseshell-point Siamese named Katy. She’s very affectionate and very yowly. We recently took her to Oregon to stay with good friends of ours while we live in Japan for two years, and we’re going to miss her a lot. *sniff*
03. City or Country?
I’m a city girl, all the way. I like the country in small doses, but I definitely prefer living in big cities.
04. Chocolate: milk, dark, or white?
I don’t have strong feelings about chocolate—I like it but it’s not my favorite thing—but in general, the darker the chocolate, the better.
05. What was your very first fandom?
The first thing I remember being fannish about is the movie Annie, when I was 6 or 7 years old. I had posters, I had toys, I had the soundtrack and played it incessantly on my Fisher-Price record player and sang along to all the songs, which I knew by heart. I was also a BIG Star Wars fan from the time I saw Empire Strikes Back in the theater when I was the same age. The first fandom I lurked in was X-Files. I visited some websites and forums, but didn’t post anything myself. The first fandom I participated in actively was the Chuck fandom.
06. Day person or Night person?
I am decidedly a night owl.
07. If you could go anywhere in the world (money not a problem), where would you go?
St. Petersburg, Russia. New Zealand. Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, to visit my good friend jnwlsn and her family. Australia again, to visit my dear friend nofishinthispond and meet jenndoesnotcare and laimelde and tielan and others.
08. What is your favorite thing to do, or hobby, when you have time off from work/school?
Bake. Read. Paint pottery. Crochet.
09. Do you have a favorite holiday you like to celebrate?
I love Thanksgiving. It’s barely commercialized, and it involves eating lots of delicious food with family and friends and being thankful for your blessings. No gifts to exchange, no cards to send. Also, because we move around every couple of years thanks to the Navy, our main Thanksgiving tradition over the years has been doing something different every year, which is kinda cool.
10. Any Fictional Character crushes? If so, who?
Raleigh Becket. Jack O’Neill. John Crichton. Steve Rogers. Eliot Spencer. Lloyd Dobler. Kenneth Branagh’s Benedick. James Spader’s Daniel Jackson.
Thanks for tagging me, Jenn!
Favorite piece of classical music?
Do you like dressing up, or do you loathe it? Do you dress pretty casually most of the time?
Do you have kids, or want to have them someday? (If this is too nosy, feel free to say ‘pass’.)
Han Solo or Indiana Jones?
What’s the first sci-fi show or movie you remember getting into?
What’s a good book you’ve read recently?
What’s your go-to comfort food?
