Can you talk a bit about the staging of "Burn"? My guess is that Eliza is alone for most of it, but I'm curious if Hamilton (or someone else) makes an appearance. Thanks :)!
Well, there’s a clip from “Burn” floating around somewhere, so if you haven’t seen that yet you might want to dig it up. Here’s a gifset, to give you some idea.
Eliza is alone on stage for the entirety of the song, sitting by the stone bench that she and Hamilton had shared during “That Would Be Enough.” The lighting is very cool, emphasizing the flame in her lantern (it’s real fire, just fyi), and she’s got a stack of her letters and an ash bucket. For most of the song she’s on her knees, and towards the end she lights one letter, puts it in the bucket, and then dumps the rest of the letters in with it. When she says the line, “You, you, you...” she’s aggressively scanning one of the letters, basically implying that when she looks back on their correspondence it’s all about Hamilton and what he wants.
