SEA OF DREAMS by Dennis Nolan is another of my top fave #picturebook buys for myself this past Christmas. This wordless book is magical. A girl spends the day building a sandcastle at the beach, then leaves it in the evening as the tide starts to come in. A light appears in the sandcastle window, tiny people looking out, and then we see them sail through (to them) giant waves towards safety. They encounter mermaids their size (the size of sea horses), and camp out on a small rocky island close to the shore where the girl built her sandcastle. The story comes around full circle when the next morning the girl builds another sandcastle, the last page showing a light appearing in the window as the tide rolls in. A perfect ending, suggesting the same thing happening all over again! . . I love so much about this book - the magic and surprise of the story; the beautiful painted illustrations that take up entire spreads; that the girl is black and the little people are made up of many different races (not just white); the suggestion that the girl created the little beings by creating a home for them; and the ending that makes the story continue on in our minds. . . SEA OF DREAMS encourages creativity and dreaming, a sense of magic and possibility and hope, and may make readers want to create their own sandcastles. This book is a keeper, and is now one of my favorites. Highly recommended. 5/5 stars. . . . #dennisnolan #seaofdreams #roaringbrookpress #picturebooks #kidlit #bookstagram #bookrecommendation #bookrec #bookishlove #readingforever #readinglife #ireadkidlit #booknerd #bookgeek (at Scarborough, Toronto)
