So I finished all of Acchan movies (kind of). Here’s a short summary.

What I like:

Moratorium Tamako should go into the altar as Acchan’s go-to movie. This film is like the girl herself, my pace, subtly but effortlessly humorous, and weirdly charming. I’m not sure I can give an eloquent description of what the story’s about but before I know it, I’m hooked. If you can like Acchan in here then you can appreciate her as an actress. PS: is it possible that Acchan was born to do dry humour?

Kueki Ressha (The Drudgery Train) is a great film about wasted hero, about misfit who can’t understand the way of the world, who get stuck between high self-esteem and low self-confidence, who dream big while pissing youth away and letting life passing by. Of all Acchan’s films, this one is my favourite but won’t be my suggestion for fans who want to check out their idol’s acting career. First, because this movie is not an easy watch, it’s realistic, sometimes even harsh and vulgar and painful, it’s life painted in one of those rawer colours. Second, I wouldn’t call it an Acchan film, I think of her appearance as a lovely ornament.

What I’m neutral:

Ashita no Watashi no Tsukurikata (How to Become Myself) is nice, both the movie and Acchan’s first hand (?) experience in acting. Casting worked for Acchan here, her ‘watch me while I’m suffering from gloominess’ vibe fitted the role quite neatly some parts she managed to impress me even more than a more-experienced Narumi Riko. There’s some snooziness but the story keeps me curious enough to keep going till the end. I’ll have to pass any offer for a second watch though.

Seventh Code gives me the cheap plot of Akimoto Yasushi and/or AKS getting their hands on some dirty secrets of Kurosawa Kiyoshi then blackmailed him into making an Acchan movie and the guy made sure everybody knew what he felt about it. This production feels more like a rough sketch of a film rather than a finished product, but if it is, then it’s a top-quality rough sketch. The camera work and production design are stunning, characters have dimension (or at least some of them) and there’re some very cinematic elements but as a whole it gives off a “halfway” vibe like someone out there couldn´t be bothered enough to pour in real efforts.

What I don’t like:

Moshidora bores the hell out of me even when I listen to my inner screaming and skip all the non-Acchan parts. Despite her approachable girl-next-door image, Acchan simply just sucks when it comes to portraying highschool girl.

I refuse to go near Kuroyuri Danchi. It’s an horror movie.

And intended to pass Densen Uta for the same reason but made the mistake of checking out the cast. The logic here is if I can endure 2 horror movies for Hashimoto Ai then there’s no reason I couldn’t spare 2 hours for a mass suicide story featuring a heavenly combination of Matsuda Ryuhei, Iseya Yusuke and no freaking way it´s Abe Hiroshi. The highlight for me is seeing MatsudaRyu doing the wota chant (sort of) in an AKB theatre show. Other than that, I simply don’t get this movie, seriously at one point I had to go watch random Britney Spears MVs on Youtube to keep my brain cells alive, at least until Abe Hiroshi appears. A wiser decision would have been sticking to my first instinct but let’s be honest here, there’s no way I can avoid this, three actors on my like list together and in a movie heavily featuring AKB, the bizzareness alone is worth checking out if only just for the sake of checking out.

Couldn’t find any sub for Nasu Shonenki and thank god for that because it looks like one of those movies where all the characters are in a secret competition to see who can gush out more rainbows and cupcakes aka lines taken straight out from ‘Chicken soup for the soul”. I could be wrong and it could be one of Japanese cinema classics but my patience is wearing thin after wasting one evening watching Yuko running left and right to soothe some old girl’s ghost and ‘let the world hear your beautiful voice once again’ or whatever the crap. I think I’ll chance it.

I had wanted to wait for Sayonara Kabukichou before concluding this because I’m not exactly thrilled with the idea of both my likes are from the same director and Sayonara just seems like the kind of film that would speak to me. But I’m not sure how long it will take so update later maybe?
