UK hiphop is a funny one. I have been into hiphop for a good ten years. I was into metal music whilst at school and have only been listening to all genres of music in recent years. I love music and since living in London I have been able to see a lot of artists live. The first UK hiphop album I purchased was Mark B and Blade 'The Unknown'. When I bought this album I got a free UK hiphop compilation CD which was the moment I first discovered the talent of UK emcee's. It was a nice feeling to hear people like, Skinnyman, Jehst, Blak Twang and Taskforce rapping about UK issues and topics.
It's weird to think how most US hiphop / rap songs dominate the UK charts. Where's the UK at? It’s not like there is no talent. Only recently have we started to see UK artists get into the charts. Mainly the artist's have come from the grime scene such as Chipmunk, Tinnie Tempah, Wiley, Dizzie Rascal, Tinchy Strider, and Example.... Maybe it's me but I love the traditional hiphop - two turntables, samples, scratching and lyrics that either tell a story or an issue happening in the UK. So few people have little acknowledgment of the UK scene. I love US hiphop, and yes it's where it originates from but people should supporting music from the UK.
This nicely brings me on to the record labels who are putting out records for the UK talent. First off, there is YNR productions who was cofounded by Jehst and tommy Evans. On the label you can check Jehst label mates, Micall Parknsun, Jyager, Sir Smurf Li, and DJ IQ. With many more artists on the label, this is probably the most established label in UK hiphop.
Over the last couple of years the UK has seen artists such as, Fliptrix, Contact Play, and Leafdog who was originally in three amigos. High Focus Records has only been around for the last couple of years but they have been really busy with numerous amounts of releases on the label. I first got to see Fliptrix at one of Suspect Packages evenings which is a monthly night in London’s Brick Lane. He was selling his debut album for £5 and I always try and buy a record if I have cash on me. Since his debut album which came out ‘Theory Of Rhyme’ expanded the axis in 2010, The 4 Owls saw Fliptrix’s creative output explode in 2011, and Fliptrix’s third solo venture ‘Third Eye Of The Storm’ looks set to push Fliptrix to even higher heights in 2012. All this in just over two years is an incredible achievement along with being the founder of High Focus record label. Check out all the artists on their web page - Jam Baxter is one of my favourite emcee’s on the label.
Before living in London I lived most my life in Birmingham and I was really disappointed with the lack of hiphop considering it’s the second biggest city in the UK. Over the last few years artists like Sonny Jim and Kosyne have been emerging from the West Midlands. Eat Good Records is an independent UK hiphop label based in Birmingham, Sonny Jim, and Kosyne have featured on YNR producer Jon Phonics. While Sonnyjim has collaborated with Jehst, DJ IQ, and Jack Flash.
An artist who has continued to be in the hiphop game and has showed they are not afraid to test the boundaries of hiphop is Foreign Beggars. These guys are one of my favourite UK hiphop acts. One of the reasons is I think DJ Nonames is always a step ahead using other styles of beats. A couple of years back he released a dubstep style album that had a number of underground grime and hiphop artists on the album. Type their name into YouTube and you will see what I mean. All their sounds are classified as hiphop but the beats have changed and it sounds great. Check out dented records - Stig in the Dump, Dr Syntax and LDZ are on the label - all very talented.
