Maggie Greene meets her on the porch, and hands her a glass of water, which she is grateful for. She edges a hip onto the rail, only one foot on the decking, and she thanks the taller woman, though her eyes stray out into the yard.  They start at the ground near his boots, climb slowly over his legs and his backside despite his claim that he hasn't got one, that it is flat as a plank. This is where jeans give way to belt, and belt gives way to bare skin. She has a fondness for the small of his back and the way it thickens straightly into his rib cage and trunk and then blooms out into wide shoulders. His skin glistens with sweat, and she wonders what is fluttering through his mind as he continues to split wood with solid strokes of the axe and his thickly muscled arms. To say he isn't beautiful would be to lie through her teeth, but even that is secondary. She's watched him play with Sophia when no one else had time to deal with dolls, how he either read to her and Carl, or told stories dredged up from a past. She's born witness to arguments he's had with Rick, but also the way the two would quietly laugh with each other in a time and place she could never imagine hearing that sound. He's surprisingly patient teaching the others how to use the guns that might ultimately save their life...or end it in the most merciful of ways.  She's not oblivious though. She's a good enough shot to be one of the better folk in camp, but she's far from perfect. She has come to enjoy the feel of him standing behind her, torso pressed into her back, his fingers sliding down the length of her extended arms before his fingertips reach her wrists. He adjusts her grip. His breath warm against her ear when he tells her she has bird-bones, and then smiles. Often she feels it rather than sees it, but when he does? His whole face lights up like dawn over the treeline. "Beth?" Her name breaks through her reverie, and she's suddenly glancing up at Maggie in full heat of a blush. The other woman doesn't take any offense that she's heard not a single word spoken to her. And then her face softens as she looks from Beth to Shane and back again. "My advice," she says quietly, "Is to pour that water over your head an' walk away. Or.... go grab him a cold drink and a sandwich. It won't be long before he sees what all the rest of us already know." Not fifteen minutes later, she sidles up to him with a plate of food, and a glass of ice-cold lemonade, thanks to the creek-run off water. “Hi,” she says, surprisingly shyly in that soft, husky whisper of a voice. “You hungry?”

this   might   have   been   the   most human   interaction   she   had   with   shane   yet   —   just   two   people   sharing   space,   time,   and   consciousness   with   each   other.   almost   like   they   were   casually   shopping   for   groceries   on   a   quiet   sunday   morning.   she   liked   the   subtle   feeling   of   peace   —   the   way   she   almost   forgot   that   the   world   around   her   had   actually   stopped   or   that   the   store   they   were   in   smelt   of   mildew   and   rot   that   insulted   her   nostrils.   she   could   have   patted   herself   on   the   back   for   getting   shane   to   nearly   smile.   his   serious,   cop   demeanor   had   stopped   her   in   her   tracks   at   times   and   raised   the   question   —   was   he   always   this   serious ?   she   was   determined   to   find   out   now.            

‘   ah   —   cut   the   poor   kid   some   slack.   he’s   nice.   i   like   him.   i   actually   think   he   has   a   chance   with   maggie.   ’         she   shrugs,   a   content   grin   tugging   at   the   corners   of   her   lips   as   she   fingered   through   some   outdated   tabloids   displayed   on   a   rack.   weird   to   think   of   the   things   they   used   to   care   about.   who   was   breaking   up   with   who,   who   was   getting   married,   what   celebrity   gossip   was   the   hottest,   which   fad   diet   should   they   try   next.   she   snorted   through   her   nose   before   turning   back   to   face   shane.            ‘   we   can’t   all   be   cops,   shane   —   ’         she   teases   as   she   makes   her   way   closer   to   him,   backpack   rattling   with   all   the   new   items   she   had   shoved   in   there.            ‘   i   was   surviving   even   before   the   world   ended.   and   i   kept   myself   alive   even   afterwards.   i   don’t   have   anything   to   prove,   but   —   but   i   also   don’t   have   anything   to   lose.   it   is   what   it   is.   that’s   why   you   guys   should   let   me   do   these   things   myself.   plus   i   just   —   if   i   have   to   wash   anyones   fuckin’   underwear   again   i   will   walk   into   a   swarm   of   walkers.   ’            she   didn’t   think   she’d   be   that   honest   with   him,   but   there   was   something   about   being   on   the   road   with   one   other   person   that   made   it   feel   like   she   could   say   whatever.   

she   thought   about   his   next   question,   her   expression   unserious   and   near   playful.   she   wasn’t   even   sure   of   the   answer   herself.   why   had   she   tagged   along   with   shane ?   she   could   have   protested   and   asked   for   someone   else   to   come   instead,   but   she   didn’t.   so   she   shrugged,   walking   past   him   to   the   checkout   display   counter   full   of   gum   and   chapstick.   she   grabbed   a   tube   of   something   strawberry   flavored   and   opened   it   up,   pressing   it   to   her   lips   and   giving   them   a   little   pop   pop   before   turning   back   to   face   shane.            ‘   you   don’t   fit   in   either.   ’         she   says,   folding   her   arms   across   her   chest.            ‘   maybe   i   feel   safer   with   another   outcast.   even   if   you   only   just   tolerate   me.   ’            her   bubbly   facade   dissipates   just   slightly   —   her   mask   falling.            ‘   you   saved   me   that   day   —   you   could   have   left   me,   but   you   didn’t.   don’t   think   i’ve   forgotten   about   that.   ’         she   can   feel   the   level   of   seriousness   arise   and   she   quickly   throws   her   smiley   mask   back   on   and   shakes   her   head,   shoving   her   new   chapstick   in   her   pocket.            ‘   you   know   what’s   funny   —   i’ve   actually   been   arrested   before.   now   here   i   am   on   a   looting   spree   with   a   cop.   ’

It felt strange to be pulled from her facility but the young man had been right. She only had so much food but there was enough firepower for a small army. Maybe, after he took her to their group, she could speak to their leader about coming back. Kara knew how men could be and even though she never tried to be, they were mostly intimidated by her. Her name was on almost all the small arms in the area, well at least her last name.

Glen, the name of the young man said that the person doing the leading was a deputy in a smaller town but he couldn't remember the name of the town. With that, it might be easier than she thought because she knew most of them from her time traveling around to show them the uses for the new arms that had been purchased and given to them by the state.

It didn't take long for them to drive back into the hidden location in the quarry and she thought it was a great location to hold off any that might come this far out. If the horde got too but it might be an issue but no reason to worry about what if situations. Kara didn't deal in what ifs.

Everyone looked at her as she walked in and as she was about to ask who did she need to talk to, the leader walked up to her. Kara's lips parted, not quite sure what to say. So instead of saying anything, Kara ran up to him and with her tiny frame, she wrapped her arms around his neck as she felt her feet leave the ground. Her face was buried in his neck, still not letting go of him with tears in her eyes.

"You're still alive."

She is a living contradiction; at once fierce and reticent, Beth has always been a shy little thing. An apology lingered on her lips after the first time they'd kissed though in the moment she'd been as passionate as the sun was hot in the high summer sky. In camp she hardly ever strays far from him when it can be avoided, though once they are alone she seems to come to life, an elemental of fire and brightness like the volcanoes that she tells him about. Teases him when she says that they spawned her like they made her islands all those millions of years ago. "An' I'm yours," she answers husky but demure, agreeing with him in the most primal ways. Hold me tighter. Closer. Let me wear your love on my t'roat. My t'ighs. Your teeth an' ya lips. I wan' all of dat. Set me down on da counter. Carry me upstairs. Doesn't mattah to me, so long as you go' and devour me, Shane. Let's be da only two people in da world, let me be loud as we like." She's asking for things they can't really indulge in back at camp, where sound carries. Where even a breath can bring ruination.

It was difficult to hear anything over the sounds of blood rushing in his ears, his pulse thrumming erratically as the familiar sense of panic overtook any logical thought that might have dared make an appearance. It was always during fucking panic attacks that he lost all sense of reason, as though that wasn't the one time he needed it most.

Nodding at the instructions, Eddie tried to do as he said, to focus on the voice that could guide him through it. It was difficult, sure, the overwhelming need to just up and run altogether too much -- But he was nothing if not stubborn, even against his own terrible judgement.

"I'm - I'm okay," he managed, although the words were uttered weakly amidst stuttering breaths. "I just... I need my inhaler."

Bad luck, that’s what would be Carol’s undoing. Not a mistake on her part, not carelessness, nothing like that. No, instead it would simply be bad luck. The inconvenience of the entire shelf she hadn’t even touched collapsing that turned a quiet run for supplies into an absolute shitshow.

The dead she could out manoeuvre, and really that was her only option as she was severely lacking in ammunition. Honestly, they really hadn’t been a problem. Sure, she had to sneak by a few – maybe a dozen in total, but they hadn’t noticed her. That was a win.de

No, her bad luck had caused her to draw the attention of people. Ordinarily, living, breathing people. A group of about five men, who’d ran into her when they heard the god damn shelf fall. She’d almost gotten away, until some scrawny, blond teenager shouted that she was there.

“Well, you out here all by yourself?”

“You got a group?”

“You can come with us, Sweetheart.”

“No, I’m good.”

Their leader pointed a gun at her, “I insist.”

Five men, four bullets.

“Oh,” Carol scowled, “well if you insist—”

Quickly, she grabbed hold of the shelf and yanked it over, darting away as three of the five ended up assaulted by an avalanche of items. The deafening blare of a gunshot made her duck, crashing through the back-alley fire exit. She ran down the narrow corridor, distinctly aware of the footsteps closing in behind her.

She swung around, her own gun ending up pointed square at the teenager’s face. His eyes were bizarrely blue, so bright and vivid. For all the confidence he’d possessed inside, now he was a kid again. Terrified as he stared down the barrel.

“No, wait—”

She struck him as hard as she could on top of the head, then kicked him to the ground. Carol pivoted and ran away, down another alley, and around a corner.  She ended up in a small parking lot for used cars, and slid behind a sedan as she worked on catching her breath.

“Shit,” she hissed.

It was then she noticed him. Someone else ducked behind a car, two down from the one she’d chosen. She froze, staring at him in equal parts fear and confusion. He hadn’t been with the group, no. But that didn’t mean he wasn’t with them and had just gone off a different way. And even if he wasn’t – her experience with the living hadn’t been the greatest. She could trust the dead to always try and eat her, the living were different. Still very human. Still very unpredictable.

She clenched her jaw, bringing the weapon to bear.

She could hear the others, shouting to one another. Calling her a bitch, wondering where’d she went. They were getting closer.        

Today really wasn’t her day.
