~ Derek Lucas, circa 1962
Derek Lucas, was inspired by the super-recent Arthur meme — the cartoon aardvark represents utter frustration with a clenched fist. New York-based photographer Benjamin Langford reinterpreted the meme through his own lens. Langford often shoots flowers with a languorous, detached gaze, printing them larger-than-life. They represent the elusive illusion of authentic experience, a tantalizing beauty never quite reachable. For #TFWGucci, a Le Marché des Merveilles watch on his wrist and a bunch of flowers in his fist, Arthur is still frustrated. - Text by Kyle Chayka.
Ege Islekel appropriates sculptures and paintings from art history to make her graphic works. Both referential and completely contemporary, they delight in the collision of popular culture and fine art. As a visual joke, Islekel superimposes van Gogh’s visage over famous album covers. Her #TFWGucci memes play with Neo-Classicist paintings, brought to life by captions from Sebastian Tribbie Matheson and Derek Lucas that namecheck art history as well as 21st century romance. - Text by Helen Holmes.

Drunk At the Bar | | Derek & Lucas
Lucas looked at his drink. It was empty. All the glasses were empty. He looked up, searching around for that cute bartender, but the bar had emptied out.
"Tis a conspiracy," he slurred. Where did everyone go? Who drank all his drinks? "Fiiine, I'll gets myself my own drink, goddammit." He hauled himself to his feet and leaned over the bar to grab at a bottle of something. Lucas tipped it up, pouring its contents in his mouth. "Mmm, rum!" But the bottle had a shot cap and only a trickle came out. Lucas struggled to get the cap off, perhaps a little too vigorously and fell off his chair with a heavy thud.
