I remember the first time I thought about God when I was a little kid. One day, on my way to kindergarten I just pictured this huge apple in the sky. My father taught me the Lord’s Prayer a few days before he left. He only said it once, but for some reason, I never forgot the words. I prayed every night just to keep his memory close to me. But as I grew older, realizing he was not coming back I just stopped praying. At 21 I had already been playing the piano for almost a decade. I loved Jazz, it led me to spirituality and eventually to Gospel music. One day, while waiting for the bus I listened to Kirk’s Franklin Why We Sing for the first time ever. When I heard the words: “I sing because I'm happy” I just started crying. Weeping. People looked at me like I was crazy. I was not happy man, I was depressed. Why did that song move me so much? Where did that feeling come from? Lately I’ve been dealing with great physical pain. Yet I find myself giving thanks, praising with joy, even in my worst moments.
“I will praise thee with my whole heart: Before the gods will I sing praise unto thee. I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: For thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. In the day when I cried thou answeredst me, And strengthenedst me with strength in my soul.”
Psalm 138:1-3 KJV
