More splendid sculptures from the Deseine brothers
They really are marvellous sculptors.
Besides capturing Max’s delicate loveliness, Claude-André gives us Mirabeau’s indelicate solidity:
(Still cannot believe this man was 10 years younger than me. He looks more like 72. Dissolute living takes its toll. Also, that is really bad smallpox scarring. The light scarring visible on the pencil profile of Max is negligible in comparison, hence not shown on the sculpture of him.)
And Gabrielle Danton, from a death mask taken after Georges asked her to be dug up… (Is it my imagination, or do the Dantons actually look alike? She could almost pass for Georges’ twin sister.)
