The Crazy Sunlight
English translations (by me)
God carried you with both hands, your life has thus been gentle shakes
It’s a pity that my life has been on the ground
Otherwise anyone who is held close, like being embraced, doesn’t need to worry
Maybe it’s us screaming up to the sky again and again
How deranged you are.. you’re hurting aren’t you
Murmuring and muttering, strange that you haven’t forgotten anything
Crazy, so crazy, that sunlight
*
Oh you’re carrying scars
Murmuring and muttering, muttering until you become like that knife you used to be
Crazy, how crazy, flowers everywhere
So crazy, when it rains they will rot
Crazy, how crazy, flowers covering every inch of the earth
Crazy, so crazy, you are the pouring rain
Crazy, so crazy, that sunlight
Crazy, so crazy, my desolation

I’ve been a big fan of 张悬 Deserts Chang for coming up to 15 years now - to me she’s by far the best Mandarin Chinese lyricist out there in terms of creative composition, depth of meaning and poetic lyricism. There are many old posts on my blog about her, but it seems that her songs really transcend time. They get more relatable the older I get. Recently I’ve been revisiting her last album Games We Play 神的游戏, released in 2012 before she went on hiatus 7 years ago🥲 This song is magical.
Chang’s hand written lyrics:
From her blog post:
"This song is about the jest of fate and its inevitability.
If a fisherman who should be at sea against the wind
and waves is on land looking at the crops,
Or if a farmer who deeply loves the land must get on a boat,
Their inner impulses and sorrow are all real,
But they tend to just look crazy.
People who are misplaced may not be able to clearly explain,
Why they and their fates are so strangely juxtaposed,
But love and hate are real,
Struggling hard and facing utter defeat are real,
Knowing who you are, and who you're not,
Is real.”
Child Song (兒歌) by Deserts Chang (張懸). 2010.
Deserts Chang is a Taiwanese indie singer-songwriter. Chang originally made her break as part of the Taiwanese indie band Mango Run (芒果跑樂團), before branching out as a solo artist in 2006. During this time, she was known for her regular performances at pubs, live house events, as well as her performances online. Since becoming an independent artist, Chang has released four albums and has released numerous nominations and awards in places like the Golden Melody Award, the HITO Pop Music Award and the KKBox Music Awards.
Chang selected “Deserts” as a stage name in order to represent herself as “mysterious” and “something out of a limbo”. Staged mostly on a guitar, Chang’s songs take on those qualities in their nostalgia driven melodies. In Child Song, Chang reflects on childhood innocence and a time of youthful innocence which cannot be reclaimed.

i did not know that today would be today; as soon as i think of tomorrow, tomorrow is no longer tomorrow but today still is today i am so sorry for not realizing it.
i walked past a store and i saw what it was selling, but i don’t know if there is anything i would pick inside.
i’m still thinking of what i wanted to tell you but they always slanted to a side so you’d always laugh and say that i had no sense of proportion about things in a scene. big things need to seem big, and small things should be so small that no one can see them you love me. generous and extreme, stern yet kind, in companionship yet in opposition. i love you. you are a world.
loneliness is like the gods, the gods are like a song. in the summer days, the gods are lonely as people, the people are lonely as gods. love is a trade, in coin and in words; my loneliness and you who are lonely are stuck in the middle each unspeaking, each seeing the other, with only joy left behind.
after i understood all of this on that day i bid you an unwilling farewell
到它垮前~ i deeply kissed your face i will never be able to accumulate such longing. i once piled up the highest amount of weariness and nostalgia before it crumbled away
that day. today is still that day. every day, is the last day that i can love you. every single today.
later, is not the future, but from now on, right now, today.
we are as humble as all the other people, busy yet separate. as we walk out of the house, onto the street where the days go on and on.
