Griff Takes Command at Terminal 5
Griff – Terminal 5 – September 17, 2024
British singer-songwriter Sarah Faith Griffiths, better known by the moniker Griff, blossomed during the 2020 pandemic. She’d put out her debut single, “Mirror Talk,” the summer before the lockdown and continued releasing music throughout isolation. That productivity undoubtedly earned her the Rising Star award at the 2021 Brit Awards — and earned her an opening slot on Dua Lipa’s Future Nostalgia tour in 2022. Now, Griff is seizing the moment with the July arrival of her first LP, Vertigo, which Rolling Stone UK described as putting “whiplash-like feelings into a debut album full of emotional breakthroughs and nimble production.”
Headlining her own tour, the young artist hit Terminal 5 on Tuesday. The titular track kicked off the night, which was fitting as “Vertigo” soundtracked the trailer for the third season of Heartstopper, which had dropped hours before last night’s show. The rising pop star commanded the room like a seasoned performer, effortlessly orchestrating sing-alongs while twirling across the expanse, reverberating into the rafters. Griff highlighted the Auto-Tune-heavy “Where Did You Go” as the North Star of the album because it questioned how much she’d changed during its production. Fans delighted in Brat Summer, bathed in lime-colored lights, as the headliner treated them to a cover of Charlie XCX’s “Apple.”
Griff traversed into the center of the floor for an acoustic session that brought an intimacy to the venue. “Forgive Myself,” an oldie for NYC Day Ones, was sandwiched between the folk-tinged “So Fast” and the dreamy “Everlasting.” Returning to the stage, she belted out “Black Hole” with the crowd taking on the chorus. The evening reached a crescendo as the place turned into a proper dance club with pink spotlights dotting the stage during “Cycles,” and a sea of heads bopped along to “Miss Me Too.” You couldn’t not dance to the infectious beats, and revelers clearly left with a bounce in their step. —Sharlene Chiu | @Shar0ck
