Myra reached the edge of the forest where it cleared away for the river, greeted by a string of soldiers on the other side who were guarding the bridge and the edge of their defenses. At the sight of her, of the frayed ends of her delicate dress, adorned in armor, sword gleaming at her waist, they all stared, breathless. She took hold of her helmet in her armor plated hands and lifted it, letting her hair swing free and be caught in the light breeze, taking a breath of the fresh air and shaking the sweat from her forehead.
The men cheered. It started in a trickle, the men nearest to the bridge calling with joy and vigor that their leader had survived the fray, and had returned to them. It grew so loud it took Myra by surprise. Each individual heart was pumping blood into the body, sucking hair into the lungs, forcing sound out through the throat to join the chorus that rang through the air for her. It hit her, the sound overwhelming her like a hailstorm, all at once and then drowning, crushing her ears. She stood, unmoving and felt a sudden wetness in her eyes. Her mind was blank for a moment because she had, somehow, even after all this time, forgotten who she was. Forgotten she was their queen.
Cover preview! Thanks everyone for being patient as I work on this monster.
Phew, I finally finished my massive plot revision for Desiderium: The War Without, my sequel novel. Now I’m just waiting on my editors to see how they like it and then it’s the home stretch to publishing. Cover art coming soon!
A queen is supposed to be practical. She’s supposed to be sensical and thoughtful, and she should never make decisions on the whim of her heart. But that’s exactly what she had done, and for all the guilt she felt, for all the betrayal that seemed to weave together and drape itself over her like a palpable new form of existence, she couldn’t help but gaze up at him where he sat beside her on the bed. She was in awe, and it was a tremendously bright feeling, to be in awe of another person who is also in awe of you.

“Fine,” Myra muttered, looking back out the window. “You know I could just read your mind to know the truth, but I won’t. I don’t have to, to know.” She said the words and hated herself for them at the same time. She knew any anger he had towards her was justified, and yet the defensive reaction was instinctive. She tried to allow him to wound her without putting up a fight, but she couldn’t restrain her arms from coming up to block him, to fight back. Perhaps if she had no emotional stake in the matter, letting him strike at her would be easy. As it was, each time she was expected to take a step away from him, it felt equivalent to a thousand steps bearing the weight of a mountain on her chest.
