Designer Spotlight - Plakinger
In an exclusive interview, Mother - Daughter duo Galina Plakinger and Svetlana Ziggel talk about combining elements of men's tailoring to create unpretentiously luxurious fashion through Plakinger.
Here is what the designer duo have to say -
1. What was the creative inspiration behind your brand?
PLAKINGER is based on the idea of creating modern and unpretentiously luxurious fashion by combining feminine classics with elements of traditional men tailoring. The pantsuit turned out to be the starting point for every of our collections. The perfectly tailored blazer is an all-time masterpiece that we complement with softening feminine silhouettes and menswear inspired details to create our essential PLAKINGER look.
2. Your Earliest Fashion Memory?
GP: I have always been fascinated about clothing and it started as a girl playing with dolls, changing their robes and trying to create new ones from fabrics I found at home. When I became a student, I got a little sewing machine and created my own dresses; I found my love for the touch and feel of fabrics and the craftsmanship and creativity of creating clothing.
SZ: It was my mother wearing pleated full skirts in pastel colors, her purple colored and perfectly cut velvet jacket with matching peep toes, her wrap style dresses and wedge pumps. I spent a lot of time as a child watching my mother work on bespoke clothing in the atelier.
3. Who is your fashion muse?
Fashion changes very fast and a lot of styles and themes are en vogue at the same time. Although we are inspired by certain personalities, we are constantly looking for new directions and influences in each season. Sometimes we derive them from art or other developments of society.
4. Describe your personal style?
SZ: When I still worked in an office I preferred wearing skirts and dresses. Since I had my two kids (2 and 4 years old) I have become much more casual day-in-day-out, primarily wearing tapered and cropped pants or jeans with sweaters, shirts or t-shirts that are styled up or down with a blazer or boxy jacket. My most recent wardrobe discovery is the jumpsuit: versatile, perfect for many occasions and easy to style.
GP: I have a lot of work in my atelier, but need to meet clients for bespoke orders during the same day. Thus, I usually wear comfortable basics that with the addition of e.g. a more sophisticated jacket work for a client appointment. Afterwards I can put it off again and continue working on client orders in the atelier.
5. What is your favorite place in the world and why?
SZ: The wilderness of Africa has always touched my heart - the smell and colors of landscape and the wildlife as well as the warm light that gives everything significantly more of character. The Namib desert with its contrasting landscapes, its breathtaking light and colors probably is my favorite place. But I also like cities, particularly Paris that with all its culinary offerings, shopping opportunities and the pace of life seems like an irresistible candy store.
GP: I had to change my home a lot of times, today I enjoy just being where my kids and grandchildren are. That feels like the best place on earth for me.
6. Most beloved thing in your wardrobe?
SZ: I love the timeless and valuable pieces that I have been wearing and collecting for a long time as they provide me with memories and the idea of passing them on to my daughter. And I am lucky to have numerous such pieces, some from our own atelier, but a lot from other great designers.
GP: The perfectly tailored blazer, for me is the all-time masterpiece.
