Redlines
A junior designer once asked me, “What should I include in a redline?” A “redline” is a UI specification document, named as such because it was common to use red lines to mark spacing, dimensions, and other callouts. A lot less is required today due to more capable tools that make it easier to transfer the work that designers do into the code that developers write. Many designers don’t bother creating much in the way of specifications at all, but believe that to be short-sighted. There is still value in documenting intended behavior. This is what I redline in UI specs.
Initial State – In what state is a UI component first displayed on screen (e.g., enabled, disabled, hidden)?
Initial Value – What value does a UI component, like a form field, contain when first displayed?
Hint Text – Some fields display hint text until you type content into them.
Events – What happens when you, or anything, interacts with a UI component? Very often, a single component will have multiple events. (e.g., on load, on change, on hover, on press).
Content – Many UI components, like menus, display content.
Format – Form fields sometimes display content in a specific format (e.g., date field).
Required – Which fields must a user fill in to proceed?
Validation – The system must check certain user input to insure it is valid (e.g., a unique name).
Permission – Some UI components will only be accessible if a user has a specific permission.
This isn’t an exhaustive list, but it covers the most common information.

Harmony
During a spare moment at Interaction 19, I checked email on my work phone to see what was going on back at the office. I was copied on a message from a developer that just recently joined our team to one of my designers. He had a question about a particular error message that he needed to show, unsure whether it should be displayed as a banner or a modal dialog. In her reply, the designer had not only provided a clear and comprehensive answer to the question, but also recognized that the UI specification was unclear on the matter. She updated the spec and made sure that the design team new to avoid similar deficiencies in the future.
It’s a small thing, but it warmed my heart to know that this is the kind of culture that I and my team have fostered within my company.
ITEM or DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS
ITEM or DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS
Post —by Gautam Shah
.The Item or Design specifications are very traditional. These are used for execution, manufacturing, fabricating, erecting, for procuring ready-made objects, and also for effecting various services. The term Design here means any scheme, as such orally conveyed, written, drawn, or otherwise implied. Design or scheme specifies constituents, processes of combining,…

This page took a lot!
This page is here to sum up all my work and research so far, summarizing what I've learnt from my findings, and how it will influence the next stage of my work. The page also has my design specifications. Which, in short, is a list of all of the stuff my product HAS TO HAVE. NO EXCUSES. This list stems from what I have learnt about my target market, and my objective to produce a sustainable product.
