in musical terms, what is a "scoop"? I tried googling it but just got brand names and bands called Scoop.

Scooping into a note means starting at a pitch a little below what you actually want to hit and then sliding upward into the note you want to hit. It creates kind of a messy/casual vibe, which makes it a huge no-no in choral/chamber singing but really common in pop music. 

((I’m assuming you sent this ask because of my Joey Batey post, so what follows is a breakdown of all the scooping in Fishmonger’s Daughter. If that’s not what inspired this ask, feel free to ignore everything else in this post lol))

So in Fishmonger’s Daughter, Joey pushes and scoops his way into a lot of notes instead of hitting them dead-on. The scoop that kills me every time is the scoop into “blea” in “bleating” (followed by the voice crack/slide into “ting” - Mr Batey, sir, can you let me live, please, I am begging you--). If you pay close attention to it, you’ll notice he kind of goes “buh-lea” instead of “blea”, and the “buh” is a lower pitch than the “lea”. 

But he gets pitchy a lot in the song; he kind of alternates between lines that use, like, Straightforward Choral Technique and lines that are scoopy, which creates a delicious tension between Formal and Casual and really builds up + emphasizes the punchlines of the song. 

You’ll notice that other notable scoops include “with” in “fuck with a puck,” and “faun” in “hairy young faun,” both of which are crass lines, whereas lines like “quell your daughter’s hunger” and “naught but bad luck,” which are building up to the punchlines, aren’t pitchy at all. (“To pull on my horn” is pitchy in that Joey slides his way through it, but I wouldn’t necessarily qualify it as scoopy.) 

Other places he scoops are the beginning and end of the chaotic “da da da” section, and pretty much every “fish” in “fishmonger” that he growls instead of singing. It really drives home the raunchiness of the song lol.

Historical AU & Coffee Shop AUOooh fun! Okay so I really like the idea of a Western Geraskier (hello, Cowboy Geralt! I blame Red Dead Redemption). Some light googling has informed me that coffee was even more in demand than alcohol during this era (REALLY? okay!) But I think Cowboy!Geralt and saloon worker/coffee proprietor/coffee shop (??) owner Jaskier would be super cute. But obviously Jaskier would wind up giving up working in his parents (?) place of business to follow Geralt out on the road.
