FDA Indication/Dosages:
For the treatment and prevention of diaper rash: Apply liberally as often as necessary with each diaper change, especially at bedtime or anytime when exposure to wet diapers may be prolonged. Be sure to change wet or soiled diapers promptly, cleanse the diaper area and allow skin to dry before applying ointment.
Pharmacology: Zinc oxide is a mild astringent with some antiseptic actions. Astringents cause contractions of tissues and mucous membranes. This action promotes drying and provides a level of protection against moisture.
Evaluation: Prolonged or repeated exposure to moisture, urine, or feces can cause irritant or contact dermatitis (diaper rash) and is presented as a diffuse red and painful rash. Diaper rash is usually confined to the buttocks and perineal areas. Advanced cases usually involve candidiasis infections and will require antifungal and antibiotic treatments to resolve. The best treatment against diaper rash is prevention by keeping the diaper area clean and dry. This can include frequently changing diapers, leaving the infant uncovered for brief periods, and by using prophylactic baby powders and skin protectants. Rashes which persist or involve pustules or nodules should be referred to a physician.
Contraindications/Precautions: Do not use on open wounds or in or around the eyes. Clean and dry area before applying ointment. Contact a physician if the condition worsens or persists for more than 7 days.
Adverse Effects: Mild stinging or burning may occur when applied.
