Here I am again, bemoaning the state of romantic fiction—specifically dark romance intended for female readers.

Disclaimer: I LIKE dark romance. I just wrote one. I've written tons of fanfiction that's fairly dark. I'm always on reddit looking for recommendations, but in the past two years or so, the go-to recs have gotten worse and worse.

Part of my beef is how the tropes and character archetypes people are pushing lately depend on a society where social mores are wildly different. Mafia bosses, rich guys at academies, groups of mysteriously-comfortable-with-polyamory bullies at equally mysterious prestigious universities (in the case of dark reverse harem), and billionaires looking for contract wives from the diner down the street for some reason are all united in one thing in these books: They act ridiculous and outrageous and no one ever says anything. This is just how they are. It's accepted. If people talked the way some of these brooding asshole forced-love guys talk in real life, they'd get mocked for how bizarre they are.

There's gonna be an element of suspension of disbelief in a lot of romantic fiction. I completely realize that (and will go along with it), but I can't get over the fact that fear of the male protagonist(s) is a normal emotion from the female protagonist in so many of these types of stories, but thinking that the male protagonist is also being an asshole or weirdo or unstable maniac is rarely a major factor. The reader isn't invited to navigate a realistic scenario where someone is breaking the social contract in the course of pursuing a romantic interest.

I want to see that stuff, damnit!

At this point, I'm just proud of supplying a female protagonist who, despite tolerating things she should definitely call the cops about, looks down on the male protagonist for being weird and bad. Ignores him. Threatens to shoot him. Tells him to go to hell. Asks what is wrong with him even after she begins to like him. The bar is in purgatory.

Can we claw some realism back in the popular contemporary DR realm? Please? I'm begging here.
