Naming of The Creature

Short comic I’m working on about the reason behind the name I gave him, hopefully will be finished

I saw some debates going on about why it is “wrong” to give Frankenstein’s creature a name because he was intentionally written nameless and it’s a significant detail regarding the main idea of Mary Shelley’s work. I get you, I get you more than anyone as a person studying literature and I agree with you yet I also feel like every single name given to him by people is unique on their own and I see no harm in people creating their own versions, I personally adore seeing him and his story handled from different angles

How my asocial ass watches all those Frankenstein artists/writers that are mutuals with each other interact in the fandom and create the most astonishing works ever together from the corner

I finally got to read the entirety of the complete screenplay for Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein and I'm overwhelmed to the brim with the countless unused/altered scenes- the scene that moved me the most is mentioned below, both for mine and other artists' behalf (incredible inspiration material if you ask me) :

It's the very first interaction of Elizabeth and the Creature. There's an unused previous scene where Elizabeth is praying to a statue of Jesus Christ; its color's greenish and the attention is specifically pulled to his scars (A reference to the Creature). Elizabeth is transfixed, she worships the statue with passion and she kisses it.

And in the first encounter scene Elizabeth is seen bewitched by the Creature. She approaches him just like how she approached the Jesus Christ statue in the church scene, full of passion yet also tender as she kisses and caresses him just the same.

In the movie it's simplified into a scene of two familiar creatures finding shelter within each other. But the screenplay grants us a different perspective. The bond between them is something way more intimate, an act of worshipping. A bond formed between God's perfect creation and a devotee- something that is more than just mutual understanding, more than love- it's something biblical.

Hello hi I would be delighted to hear your thoughts about the Creature’s name

Sit back down everyone my favorite topic that I have a disgusting amount of thoughts on has come

As I mentioned before, I just love seeing people try to name him like the new family pet that has yet to be named, and I love him being handled from different perspectives

My personal favorite, and the one I use, is Deucalion. The name of the son of Prometheus, creator of the new generations. He's the main figure in the Greek version of the Flood myth.

The classic plot follows: Zeus gets angry at the current corrupted society, destroys them with a flood using the help of Poseidon and at last Deucalion and Pyrrha, his wife, creates the new generation out of rocks; the rocks Deucalion throws turn into males and Pyrrha's females. (You can check the original story for more details this is what I have in mind currently)

Now about the reasons why I like this name in particular! First and the most obvious one is that it's the very name of the son of Prometheus. Explains itself well.

The second reason I prefer Deucalion as his name is that I like to draw parallels between the plot of the Flood myth and the last scene of the movie. Deucalion breaks the generational cycle by physically creating a new, better one/The Creature breaks the cycle of generational trauma by forgiving Victor. You can also tie this meaning to the ship scene, where he lets go of it, thus letting go of his past generation's traumas.

The majority of the fandom calls him Adam, which I have no hard feelings towards, but I think there's this specific error when it comes to calling him that. A lot of people call him Adam stating that he refers to himself by that name in the book. It's not exactly false but also not exactly accurate. The reason The Creature specifically calls himself Adam in that dialogue is that he states that he should've been Adam, but he is not. He compares himself to Milton's Satan more than God's Adam. It's an attempt to make himself and his current situation understood by Victor through metaphors.
