Mis Hanes LHDT+ 2023 : Gair y Dydd #3 -Deurywiol
LGBT+ History Month 2023: Word of the day #3-Bisexual
In a similar way to the English term bisexual, Deurywiol had long been used in Welsh to mean 'dually sexed' (an archaic way to refer to intersexuality). That is, until 1973, when in Y Geiriadur Termau, a variation of the term (Deuryw) appeared, referring to sexuality for the first time in Welsh.
Similarly to Lesbiaidd, Deurywiol got it's first dictionary usage in the early 70s. This is closely followed by another variant (Deurywiog) used in Y Geiriadur Bach in 1974. (These instances and more are recorded in my blog post here).
Bisexual terminology is present in Welsh dictionaries in the 80s, however, the frequency of its appearances drops during this period.
Usage picks up again in the 90s and in 1995 Geiriadur yr Academi includes several pieces of bisexual terminology (Deuryw, Deurywiol, Deurywiog) bisexual, (Deurywiad/Deurywiaid) a bisexual/bisexuals, (Deurywioldeb) bisexuality, and (yn ddeurywiol) in bisexual(ity).
Deurywiol is used in dictionaries to this day, though like with many pieces of LGBT+ terminology, it's inclusion is often infrequent and spread out.
