Development without Displacement

During this season on the Green Team, as part of our civic engagement, and even our environmental justice portion, we attended Union United meetings. Union United is a coalition of stakeholders in Somerville, Union Square in particular. This includes small business owners, residents, activists, immigrant groups, religious congregations, labor unions, and community-based organizations, working to ensure that the Union Square redevelopment process results in tangible benefits -- not displacement -- for the Union Square community. They are working together to create a community benefits agreement, a contract they can sign with the master developer and the City that will create a diverse, sustainable, and equitable Union Square.

As a new member of Union United, it was very exciting and great to feel like as group of teenagers like us, had a chance to bring about real change in our community. By going to these meetings I felt more informed, and more ready to take on gentrification and advocate for development without displacement. While I do admit that it was hard to keep up with all the “development” and “contract” lingo, I do think it’s important to hear it all. People aren’t aware of things that happen within their own community, and that’s not okay. We should all work towards being active members of our community, in whatever way we can.
