trying to gush about video game puzzles is really hard. like, okay, you have to add numbers to reach a certain value, right? but it’s ACTUALLY a metaphor for the ship of theseus. and the number it adds up to is the precise year of your death. and solving the puzzle confirms the villain’s hypothesis that you were always going to add those numbers together because your free will has been manipulated. is this getting through to you or
There are no posts on Tumblr about Device 6, which means I have to make one.
Device 6 was created in 2013 by Simogo, which recently made Lorelei and the Laser Eyes and Sayonara Wild Hearts though Device 6 has much more in common with Year Walk than either of those, with play on an iPad or iPhone specifically in mind.
It's a short visual and narrative puzzle game where you are a 'Player' using your mobile device to observe a character, Anna, as she navigates the mysterious island where she wakes up.
Your device renders the things that Anna experiences in abstracted text and images, and asks you to swipe and tilt your screen to follow along. It's a nice tight experience with a fun meta-plot running parallel to Anna's story, and well worth the hour or so I spent with it.
From the official webpage:
Everything in DEVICE 6’s art, from the small tech blurbs, to the buttons, has an explanation tied to the narrative. We wrote a guide to ourselves, which explained how the mysterious organization HAT, and their different devices operated. To create an art style that could match these technical explanations, we looked for inspiration in maps, infographics, diagrams, blueprints, old black and white photographs, and typography.
Also the original song "Anna" by Johnathan Eng, is a bop:
The only bad thing I can say about it really is that it's iOS only. 😔 But if you have an old iPad or iPhone kicking around, check it out!
i can’t explain it but suwa rei gives me device 6 vibes
I don't play many mobile games but Device 6 was one of the best. Amazing use of the form and style out the wazoo. I might need to get an ipad just to go back and replay this gem.
Binch lmao

Episode 8 - SUBCON LIVES!
Holy smokes. We’re back! How’s by you? Cyborg cops, street punks, super tanks, ninjas, cowboys, spies and explosions have all been waiting for you! Oh, and there’s video game music in there somewhere.
On this episode, we barf about what we’ve been playing: Leland’s special lover, Overwatch, Leland’s number one enemy, Adventure Island and Vince’s OTHER best friend, Destiny.
Also: How the Genesis FM synthesis fits perfectly with dance music of the early 90’s, the unique sound of the Commodore 64, game preservation, the NES mini, Vince loves being a sneaky ninja, the highs and lows of JRPGs, Team Fortress 2’s big bombastic music and gameplay, sprites and colorful graphics vs realism, Oddworld Inhabitants’ worlds and the must play Device 6.
Phew. We miss anything?
