I don’t know when exactly you sent this beauty of a message set because Tumblr apparently didn’t think to tell me, and I also don’t know if 8/9 has gone missing or if there was a bit of a miscount, but MY GOD.

Thank you very much for sharing because I don’t have enough people IRL who actually care about this stuff for me to get down into the nitty-gritty. This is how I usually try and work with the timeline:

DMC1 - 2001 (Dante and Vergil age 28)

DMC2 - early 2006 (Dante 32)

DMC3 (game) - post-August 1992/pre-august 1993 (Dante and Vergil age 19)

DMC4 - late 2010 (Dante 37)

DMC5 - 30th April -  24th July 2016 (Dante and Vergil 42, turning 43)

Dante and Vergil born in 1973 (works for DMC1 release date birthday)

Eva killed by Mundus in 1981

Vergil in Fortuna searching for clues about Sparda pre-internet in 1991

Nero conceived in 1991, born either late ‘91 or early ‘92

Vergil out of Fortuna and gone to team up with Arkham before Nero is born (DMC manga occuring 1 year before game, therefore either post-August ‘91 or pre-August ‘92)

Anime happening during 2005, making Patty 7, born in 1998

DMC2 being just shy of 10 years before ‘BtN’ since it occurs a year before DMC5, but roughly in the right ballpark (Otherwise Patty’s Bday overlaps too much)

Nero being either just turned 19 or just approaching his 19th birthday in DMC4 (because fuck Sanctus’ date guesstimation. Doesn’t fit with when Vergil would have been around in the human world anyway)

Kyrie, as a year older, being about 20 at this point

Nero being 24-turning-25 in DMC5

Nico being 26 or 27 in DMC5 because Agnus left her mother when she was 2 on the orders of Sanctus who had just been inducted as His Holiness, making her D.O.B. some time around 1989-1990

DMC’s 1, 2 and 3 would all work using their respective release days as the date on which they occur.

DMC4 could work (at a push), if we assume that the game happens in January 2011, then BtN occurs mid-to-late 2015, making the 5 years an approximation due to it actually being 4 and a half/4 and 3 quarters.

Otherwise, we could move it back about a month and pretend that The Festival of the Sword is the Order’s mid-winter holy day in place of Christmas, still putting us in winter but on or around December 25th 2010 (Which is when I like to place it).

And I just like keeping DMC5 in 2016, what with the in-game calendars and all.

Your maths definitely looks like it checks out, especially with trying to keep things to the rough date of release. I just like to jig things around a little, for my own preference.

Devil May Cry Timeline

Ok, I said I will update the old timeline I made, since some things got retconned(like Patty’s age and DMC2 taking place before DMC4 now)with the new novel “Before the Nightmare” and DMC5.

DMC timeline is a little bit tricky to find out and you need more than one medium to connect things, but once you did, it makes sense. I will list this in years, so you can be sure this is Dante’s and Vergil’s age and I will add Nero’s age(and Patty’s) in some parts. As before, I considered all canon media we got till now =)

Here we go:

(about -2000) Sparda defeated Mundus and closed the portal to the demon world

(0) Vergil and Dante were born (never mentioned when Sparda and Eva met but they were married)

(8) Sparda disappeared(died) and shortly after Eva was killed by demons, which were sent by Mundus

(early 18) Vergil visited Fortuna to search for tales and information about Sparda and impregnated a human woman(”Deadly Fortune” novel, Artbook 3142 SE) at the same time Dante was known as Tony Redgrave(”Before the Nightmare” novel)

(late 18) DMC Manga + Nero’s birth

(19) DMC3(Nero was around 1 year old)

(28) DMC1(Nero was 10 years old)

Up to this point, nothing changed in the timeline, except Vergil’s assumed age, visiting Fortuna.

(At some point between 28 and 31)The Order of the Sword found Nelo Angelo’s broken armor at Fortuna seaside and the broken Yamato at Fortuna outskirts(”Deadly Fortune” novel+”Before the Nightmare” novel)

(early 31) DMC Animation(Nero was 13 years old, Patty was 8 years old)

(late 31) DMC2

(late 35/early 36) DMC4(Nero was 17 years old, mentioned in the “Deadly Fortune” novel)

(40-41) “Before the Nightmare” novel events, taking place 5 years after the Fortuna incident and one year before DMC5 till the events of DMC5. The time skip in the novel’s plot is one year. (Nero is 22-23 years old, Patty is 17-18 years old)

(41) DMC5(Nero is 23 years old, Patty is 18 years old)(Dante’s age was mentioned on the ITG site to be 41 in 5)

I didn’t want to spam this post with maths and huge explainations, how I came up with this timeline, but don’t hesitate to ask me, if you need the exact source or information about something. I’ll try my best to explain with facts. =)

It's funny you say that because the Before the Nightmare novel actually states that Vergil didn't bother changing his name and that's how Mundus sent soldiers he made after Tony and Vergil. And in the First novel Gilver works as a mercenary so maybe Vergil could be doing that too? Apparently he traveled all over looking for Sparda's secrets. I have seen headcanon that Dante at the end of dmc 2 went to hell to look for Vergil but that was b4 they changed the timeline.

Vergil wouldn’t, really. And I mean we all saw how V was such a clever 👀 alias. So.

The first novel is no longer canon. It’s only considered semi-canon because of the use of the Tony Redgrave alias/Nell Goldstein, but yeah. The Gliver stuff isn’t really canon anymore. Which is fine, because that alias may be even more ridiculous than ‘V’.

I don’t think merc/nondescript demon killing work is out of the question for Vergil. It’s probably in the realm of what he did (aside from mugging 👀), even if the Gliver stuff specifically isn’t an option any more.

All that said: It still doesn’t make sense for Vergil to leave any sort of documented/paper trail, especially if he’s not using an alias.

Also regarding DMC2:

1.) Regardless of where it’s placed in the series, Dante went to hell at the end of DMC2 in place of Lucia because he tricked her with a double sided coin — in all likelihood it would have been a suicide mission for her. So, he enters the portal to deal with a partially summoned Argosax, and the portal closes behind him. That’s his major reason for going. What he does there, idk, but in the original post-credits ending, you hear a motorcycle rumbling outside the DMC and it’s assumed to be him. DMC2 is a mess of a game.

2.) Nelo Angelo ‘dies’ in the real world, on Mallet Island, in DMC1. Dante sees him ‘die’, and he’s long since lost the Yamato at this point. He’s probably not able to portal out into the real world either, given the state his real body is left in. Logically, there’s a low chance for Verge to be back in hell again or for Dante to be looking for a (presumed) dead man. It also kind of conflicts with Dante’s emotional state/feelings on the Vergil stuff later if he holds out any hope he’s alive. It also makes Dante not telling Nero anything about Vergil make even less sense.

I am really hoping I am keeping these ages right for this damn timeline for the Devil May Cry stories. Because I am sure if I don’t or if I mess up the ages like instead of Nero being 16 years younger then his mother only for him to suddenly be up being 18 years younger then them both. Which would be impossible since Eleison is 2 years younger then Vergil.  But in happier news I am getting closer to the part in the Vergil/Eleison story, The Raven in the Archives where Vergil and Eleison are reunited. Edit notes: Thanks to @fate-of-the-chosen for pointing out the fact that I messed up, already. I had to fix the part about Nero being 16 years younger then his parents to being 16 years younger then his mother. Anyways, hopefully I can keep these mistakes to a minimum and figure out a better way then the one I currently have to keep this stuff straight. Maybe I will give color coding things a try.

(Several years after DMC4 and I suppose shortly after DMC2, so 42-45) DMC5(so Nero is now 24-27 years old)

Hope we get the unknown part confirmed in DMC5 :)

INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION This is a page to show everyone the timeline I work with in my DMC canon. This doesn't nor should have to apply to everyone! My main sources on this timeline are from: - The games themselves - The 3142 Graphic Arts novel - The Before the Nightmare novel WHAT WE'RE WORKI...

I made this spreadsheet a while back in an attempt to sort out the DMC timeline. It includes an estimated timeline, a headcanon timeline, an explanation page to, well, explain my estimated timeline and a tiny headcanon page.

Keep in mind that you DO NOT have to take my headcanon timeline as canon. Like... at all. It’s a headcanon. It’s just me sorting out the timeline for myself and I kept it in there because I thought it would be fun to see how I personally view the DMC timeline.

With that said, I do openly admit that I might be wrong about a few things presented in this spreadsheet and could have missed some information. However, I do hope this helps some people (and their sanity - like mine) and/or inspires them to dig into the canon and lore a bit more to sort out the events and/or timeline of the games themselves!
