This new Devilman Discourse is bullshit and here’s why
So of course, there’s new discourse in the Devilman fandom, because for some reason it’s the fandom that’s been cursed with people who don’t understand that it’s not real.
Since this got longer than expected, I’m just gonna add a read more
So, on the whole “Ryo is intersex and you people are being interphobic!!!!” thing, no, no one is being blatantly interphobic or whatever you call it, we don’t know exactly how he is, the most we know it he at least has tits and a penis, that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a vagina, internal or external, so for people to be giving him one is just a headcanon and people really need to calm down.
I think the only thing I agree with is the whole trans thing, I get it, people hc him as trans because they’re trans or just want rep, I don’t give two shits, go ahead, you aren’t hurting anyone. Though I will say, I personally find hcing him as a trans person is partially erasing the fact that he’s intersex(Though this all depends on how you do it, not every headcanon of him being trans is erasure). Now don’t go out telling me I’m transphobic cause guess what, I’m trans too.
Another thing I agree with, I do find some fanworks (I’m not going to name names) fetishy, now what I mean by this is when I see art of Ryo/Satan being this curvy, 90% tit person, I get a real fetishy vibe from it, because I feel as though it’s kind of making him like a f*ta, which we all know are gross. Basically to put it short, since I can’t word things for shit, if you emphasize all the female parts of Ryo just to make him “attractive” you’re kind of fetishizing him, unintentionally or not. (And about the whole “You’re putting him in dresses!!!” thing, dude, that’s completely outdated, haven’t you heard, men can wear dresses and skirts, they’re clothes, the don’t have a gender)
Now, on the topic of the whole fanfic thing. Calling Sandra and others out like that is completely immature, and very unneeded, and to me, it made some of their arguments invalid. But what I will say, is that there are some fanworks that make Ryo/Satan’s Intersexism (If that’s what you call it) a personality trait, rather than just being part of him. I’m not personally intersex, so I can’t exactly give a direct example, but it would be like me making myself being trans part of my personality, it’s not, it’s just how I am. Yes, you can make it clear that he’s intersex, yes, it can be a part of his character, but if you’re trying to write something about Devilman in itself, don’t focus on Ryo/Satan being intersex, in most cases this isn’t intentional, so I’m not going to call it fetishizing cause it isn’t, but it does effect the work, and usually in a negative way. (DISCLAIMER:I’m not saying this is what anybody is doing, I personally don’t read fanfics all that much, it’s just a point I, as a writer, would like to point out).
Now onto the “Homophobia” aspect which I’ve been seeing. I will say (and this may make me lose some friends/followers) Ryo is canonically gay, he is attracted to men and men only, it’s canon, period. I’m not saying to pair him with a female makes you homophobic, because it doesn’t, but it is erasure by definition. No, I am not going to attack you for pairing him with a female, no one should be attacking anyone for things like that, but don’t be surprised if someone does give you a reminder that he’s gay in canon, and that’s all I have to say on that one.
Now on headcanons, I have a very short and simple opinion, it’s a damn headcanon, meaning it isn’t canon, it’s an idea and no one is hurting you by making said headcanon, don’t be a little bitch about it and scroll past.
So, now that I have all that out of the way, here’s a TL;DR, no one knows what level of intersex Ryo is, and don't act like you do just based off of your experience. A headcanon is a headcanon, getting pissed over it is immature and you’re making a joke out of yourself. “Erasure” isn’t blatantly homophobic/interphobic unless it’s clear that that’s the person’s intentions. If a straight/cis person wants to write about Ryo, they have the right to, and the only reason to call them out like that is if they’re being blatantly gross, or if the person calling them out/targeting them is immature as all hell. None of you are Go Nagai (meaning you don’t know canon nor can you make canon), stop acting like it.
