I honesty thought the end was poetic in a cynical satiric kind of way. Satan desperately tries to hold onto his illusion and when he get what he wants, it ultimately is his downfall. It is exactly the kind of punishment God would have wanted to give Satan. Satan learning to "Love" is the cherry on top and the root to his humanity he learns from the humans that gradually he crosses pathes with.
Satan creates his own Hell of Earth, and makes himself King.
