Places of Interest: Devil’s Mouth Tar Field
Burning pits of oil and tar surrounded by heavy machinery. The treacherous tar pits, man-made mountains, and drop offs form the Devils Mouth Tar Field. The miles of stripped land can be found in Coal Country somewhere between Tennessee, West Virginia, and Virginia.
Devil’s Mouth attracts trill seekers from around the Appalachians. The smell of burning oil, the breath, is the first sign the Devil’s Mouth is getting closer The difficulty of traversing the surrounding deters most, because of the lack of roads, and loose terrain. The inner most part, the mouth, is a terrifying hell’s playground. Huge valleys form steep drop-offs. Large machinery fling rubble into the sky not minding where the large rocks land. Tar pits sit hiding behind berms. The tar pits are the maw of the beast. The burning hot combination of oil and tar quickly swallows up objects and shows a small flash of fire as a consolation.
