Devils Tower was the United States' 1st designated national monument, established on September 24, 1906, by President Theodore Roosevelt in northeastern Wyoming. Devils Tower rises 1,267 feet above the Belle Fourche River & stands 867 feet from summit to base. Devils Tower is a unique geologic wonder, in modern-day it is a national park and climbers' challenge.
#tbw Since I am still recovering from shoulder surgery and am unable to climb this season, I have been going through my photo archives revisiting memories and beta of past climbs. I have done many of the Fifty Classic Climbs of North America and the Durrance Route on the Devils Tower (pictured here) is one of them. # First pioneered by Jack Durrance and Harrison Butterworth in September 1938, it was the second free ascent of Devils Tower, following the first ascent led by Fritz Wiessner in 1937. The Wiessner Route lies a few hundred feet to the right of the Durrance Route and has a comparable difficulty. Today the Durrance Route is the most popular route on Devils Tower. The route begins below and to the right of the two trees. It then ascends the left side of the leaning pillar and continues up the most inset dihedral. There are two possible finishes; a direct vertical finish, or a "classic" traverse to the right which involves leaping a gap. The route is recognized in the historic climbing text Fifty Classic Climbs of North America. - Wikipedia # We did the "Bailey Direct" finish.as well. This is an airy, exposed and very worth-while variation to the top of the tower that should be considered by everyone climbing the Durrance Route. 📷 @jk.wrnr #wyoming #devilstower #devilstowernationalmonument #adventure #fun #mountains #tradisrad #climbing_pictures_of_instagram #climbing_is_my_passion #rockclimbing #aacgram #neverstopexploring #choosemountains #climbinglife #climb #climber #climbing (at Devils Tower National Monument-Official NPS site)

Climb the Monolith! Respectfully🙏🏼 Ms Ana and Dustin Swanson we’re kind enough to swoop me up and rope me in for some movement days on the tower. 😎Summits are not always necessary. It is being in the location, discovering, listening, communicating, climbing. Beauty of process, flailures, development, growth, success, appreciation. Sliding back is sometimes progression, as it is the ebb and flow within trial and err. So thankful for the opportunity to be picked up and whisked away up and away. Forever grateful. 💜🌎🚙🧗🏼♀️🤠🙏🏼. #devilstowerlodge #devilstowernationalmonument #devilstower @devilstowerlodge @devilstowernps Protect the Tower The Tower base, sides and summit are fragile environments. Use established approach trails to climbing routes to protect the soils, plants and wildlife at the base of the Tower. Be mindful of animal homes and sensitive plants as you climb. Minimize your impact on the summit by stepping on rocks rather than plants or soil. Practice Leave No Trace ethics: stay on trails, respect other visitors, pack out all litter, etc. Human waste must be packed out (supplies are available at the visitor center bookstore). https://www.nps.gov/deto/planyourvisit/climbing.htm (at Devils Tower Lodge) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUcavzYgiKs/?utm_medium=tumblr
