I’m alive, just sort of burnt out.

Thoughts on Aizen and Kaname's friendship.
Novel wise, I know that it was revealed that Aizen promised to kill Kaname if his intentions were ever perverted, but beyond that I’m operating solely on manga content.
I’d go as far as saying that Kaname would have fallen to seeking revenge sooner than what is canon without Aizen. Becoming complicit to the shinigami machine was what Kaname feared the most, so I don’t imagine he would’ve waited 100+ years for retribution had he not befriended Aizen, who had an actionable plan.
I think people also tend to view Kaname as the tolerant, clean-handed man in the traitor trio, but he was someone VERY driven by results and in all the experimentation scenes is the MOST invested. He also has no compassion for people like Kenpachi, who is one of the most fucked-over-by-the-system characters in the Seireitei. Kaname has a rather narrow view of what is Good and even then, that’s never his priority—it’s always been revenge.
If anything, I think Aizen helped give Kaname a wider perspective and truly see the system at work and Kaname gave Aizen an equal to confide in while he was alive and a more personable perspective.
I think Aizen and Kaname had to be at least good friends for Aizen to accept him being so close. Gin was a child when Aizen found him and basically a well regarded pawn. Kaname was an equal, even when he relegated himself to being a pawn for the sake of results to further his as well as Aizen’s goals.
Basically, they were friends at LEAST, but that took the backseat to their ambitions and the angst potential is mighty.
