rare-ass personal post below
so i had come across this article, about this book, photographer Devyn Galindo’s phenomenal photo art book We Are Still Here, documenting Chicanx/Indigenous resistance and culture in Los Angeles, and because I was completely smitten with the article I sent it along to two of my co-workers who I thought would enjoy it (as they are badass Chicanx activists themselves), and put the book on my gift list. Well, the part I didn’t know was that Devyn Galindo used to work at the Girls Inc. I work at, and both the co-workers I sent this to know her, as she stays in touch and comes to visit when she comes through town. So yesterday my two co-workers showed up with a signed copy of Devyn’s book AND DEVYN, told me happy birthday, and then watched me cry undignified messy tears while I flipped through the book and told the author how beautiful her work is, how moving, how proud i am of her for being such a phenomenal artist and activist. i was not ready and not expecting that and it was just altogether the nicest surprise i’ve ever had and Devyn was the sweetest, gentlest queer being and really not at all put off by having a giant genderweird queer weeping awkwardly at her while mumbling about intersectional social justice art appreciation and she hugged me a bunch and i was undone and basically this book is fucking glorious and my co-workers are the best people and i will never be over this.
