This Au is what I think would have happened if the portal failed and caused something much worse than just letting Emmet see real world.

Things start right from the moment when Emmet fell in the portal to the real world.
When he crashed on floor, instead of being completely paralyzed, he was able to move. Emmet slowly stood from and looked around, the world was much bigger than he though it would be.
Emmet carefully touched him back, but felt nothing, the piece was gone, so he started to panic, but right at that moment he heard loud tomb, then again and again.
He looked to the direction from where the sounds were coming from and saw giant leg that moved right in his direction.
He tried to run to avoid it, but he wasn’t fast enough, it crashed right on him, but he felt nothing.
Emmet slowly opened his eyes and looked at himself, he was completely fine, the only not fine thing was that he was bit visible, but right before he could freak out, he wasn’t.
“There you are” Emmet quickly turned around and saw giant hand that caught him and right at the moment it touched him, Emmet no longer could move.
He was afraid of what’s happening to him and what this hand’s going to do with him, but when he though about the worst, it simply put him back home.
Emmet quickly jumped from the hand, to avoid another catching therapy, but the hand just moved away and soon disappeared.
For few moments he studied the place where hand disappeared and, not wanting to think about this whole madness anymore, he quickly entered the house and closed the door.
“Guys, you just won’t believe what happened to me!” Emmet shouted, but there was no respond. “Guys?”
He slowly moved in another room and saw his friends, they were panicking and shouting something.
“Guys, what’s wrong, what happ---” He asked while trying to take Lucy’s hand, but instead of taking it, his hand just went through hers.
It caught Emmet out guard, he quickly jumped from her and looked at his hands, they were ghostly, he again looked at his friends and saw that they were crying.
Emmet, still denying to believe in truth, tried again, then again and again, but every time he was just going through here, just like he was nothing but ghost.
He furiously slamed himself, “It’s not truth, this just can’t be!” He looked at his friends again, but this time, instead of crying, they were laughing.
“That’s so great that Emmet disappeared, it’s so much better without him” Emmet backed away, the sound of Benny’s voice was terrifying, no regret, no pain, only happiness.
“He was nothing but a pain” Unikitty laughed. “I though, that he never will!”
The voices of his friends were shouting, telling him how weak he was, how it’s so better without him.
“This is not real, this is just a hallucination, nothing of this is real!” Emmet tried to run away, but couldn’t, he was stunned by fear, by disbelieve, by big smile on Lucy’s face.
It all was so painful to hear, so painful to see, he knew that it wasn’t real, but couldn’t run away, the voices weren’t coming from his friends, they were in his head, right from the moment he fell in that portal.
For another year he was still trying to tell other’s that he’s still there, that he’s alive and want’s to come back, but they never heard him.
By each day he was failing, the voices were becoming more and more loud, until one day he slowly started to believe them, the more he was looking after his friends, the more he was filled with rage.
At first they were trying to find him, they were asking everybody, but no one knew where Emmet is, the more time passed, the lees they were trying to find him, until one day, they just accepted.
They accepted the fact that Emmet was forever gone, that he’ll never come back and that broke the ghost boy.
Instead of wanting to return, he wanted only one thing, make them pay, make them regret that they lost hope.
The pain and anger made him more visible, more real, more terrifying. Finally others could see his ghostly appearance, could hear his raging shouts and feel when he was touching them.
Next 2 months he spend on taking his revenge, he was driving his former friends insane, the first one to fall were Unikitty and Benny, they just couldn’t take it anymore and tried to end this suffering,
But Lucy was quick enough to call for help and from that moment they were in hospital, recovering from their attempt to die.
The next was Metal Beard, but instead of Benny and Unikitty, he was more successful and when Lucy arrived home, he was already gone.
She was left alone with Him, he was always following here no matter where she went, always trying to break her, slowly driving her insane, just like others.
“Why are you doing this!? Emmet, please!” Finally she snapped, the sound of her voice addressed to him, made Emmet smile.
He slowly moved towards her and looked right in the face, “Because, you forgot about me” He whispered. The sound of his voice was so terrifying that Lucy’s heart kust couldn’t take it anymore, she fainted.
Emmet, not feeling anything anymore, slowly took Lucy’s hand and this time, it worked. For the first time he was able to touch her and that made him back away in fear.
He was a ghost, he’s not able to do that, he’s not able to breath, he’s not able to feel his heart beat.
On that though he slowly touched his chest and felt quiet beat. “Not so ghostly anymore, huh Emmet?” Emmet quickly turned around and saw another ghost.
“Vitruvius?” Emmet’s voice was much rougher and deeper than it used to be, just like his body was much warmer. Ghost let out a chuckle and slowly flew to him.
“Never thought that I’ll be able to see someone who’s trapped between two worlds” That confused Emmet, but he kept quiet, “Half and Half, how fascinating, now, what are you going to do, Emmet?”
“It’s not like you can go forward or return back to life, at least, as others” He laughed and pointed in Emmet’s chest, right where his heart should be.
“I’m going to keep being, but not as Emmet, the Emmet died years ago” He let out the sigh and looked towards Lucy, that slowly started to wake up.
“My new ghost name is Dex, But human name, Xed” Xed looked at Vitruvius, he said nothing, just nodded and disappeared.
Xed looked at Lucy for the last time and closed his eyes, he’s going to go somewhere far away from them, somewhere where he’ll be free from what he did and maybe, he’ll find others who need help from anti-hero.
And that’s Xed’s story and everything that happened to him, before he met with Rel and helped him.
And after he left forever, he learned how to switch between his two forms and become two faced anti-hero.
