Flash Fic Friday: I beg You
@flashfictionfridayofficial
So this is what happens when a Worldbuilding Wednesday question discussion with @merigreenleaf reminds me of an old WIP that I haven't touched in 2 years and then my Spotify Release Radar offers me another cover version of "Toss a coin to your Witcher". 🤣
A little explanation: Deyani is a dwarf who grew up on the surface because her parents had been exiled (like almost every other dwarf) Karouk is a seasoned mercenary and bodyguard for Rogel, who has only just grown up and lived his entire life in a wizard's tower and is therefore still very naive. Tamsin is a dwarf and earns her living as a bard and Orianna an elf, who is actually an assassin, but has taken Tamsin into her heart and travels with her. Orianna is gender fluid.
"Tamsin, don't. I beg you. I kneel before you like a poor fool. Anything but that." Oriana's plea was heard even in the loud room. Deyani looked confused at the unequal duo and then at the rest of their company. "What's wrong with her, by the waters?" Karouk said, expressing what the others thought. Rogel and Deyani could only shrug their shoulders. Having been on the road together for over a moment now, they had never seen Orianna so desperate. That was something that was not in the nature of the elf. Flirting, making comments without being asked, impoverishing the other guests in the pub by playing cards, that was all typical Orianna. Her curiosity pushed Deyani through the room where the small corner for the musicians was. She absolutely had to know what was going on there. "Orianna, how many times must we have this discussion?" Tamsin was clearly annoyed by Orianna's behavior and used the moment to retune her lute. "Until you throw it out of your repertoire." "Hey girls, what's the problem?" Deyani asked in a good mood and with a grin on her face. Just seeing Orianna like that was worth it. "Our dearest elf doesn't want to sing "Gold for my sword" "I hate this song." It took a moment for Deyani to remember what song it was. "What's so bad about it?" Oriana's gaze could have turned her to ashes on the spot. She came closer and bent down to Deyani. "You know what I am", she whispered into her ear "That's what makes it so funny." Tamsin giggled to herself thanks to Deyani's unexpected help. Orianna blinked a few times and then raised her index finger with a thoughtful look. "You're onto something. Keep talking." Laughing, Deyani pulled up one of the empty stools and pressed Orianna on it. This difference in size between dwarves and elves was impractical at that moment. This time it was Deyani who bent down with a broad conspiratorial grin. "Quite simply, who would expect that the elven dancer and singer would be the assassin being sought at the moment when said elven singer sings "Gold for my sword" of all things in the largest pub in town? A song about doing anything for enough gold? It's the best disguise you can get." Tamsin handed over the lute and picked up the flute. "You mean, among other things..." she smiled at Orianna. It was clear to all three that Tamsin was alluding to Orianna's inclination to run around as a man and how the elf used it to lead people astray. Orianna stood up elegantly and dramatically at the same time. "All right. May I have this dance, dear friend?" "Always my grumpy elf." Deyani nodded happily and went back to the table. Karouk looked at her with a knowing smile. "That song?" "Yep, that one." They both laughed out loud and left Rogel confused.
