THIS YEAR’S TuTchTMas Joint - FRED Dances with DHARON E. JONES. . GOOD RIDDANCE 2020! And yup, here’s the perfect Good Rid-Dancer for the job. Where to start? Well first, its been a while since Broadway choreography caught my eye but this show, and especially this brother here, ushered in a new energetic realness that had all the raw electricity of the social justice movement of the streets outside. . In the show West Side Story the character of Riff is stuck in the proverbial cycle of loyalty-begetting-violence, unable to see the broader view that Tony sees. Riff pays the ultimate price, dying at the random hand of violence hyped up by racial hatred. —- The past several years have seen an America that’s more Riff than Tony. 2020 felt so inevitably ill-fated. And yeah, this innovative, promising revival was closed by Covid 25 days after opening. . But when you view this crazy moment in Broadway history for Dharon’s point of view, its even crazier. A cast injury thrust Dharon into the lead role of Riff six weeks before opening, making him the first Black Riff ever on the Great White Way. 💥❗️ Then the ugliness of reality shut him down. But his unique intense brand of joie de vivre seems to have intensified. I’m a fan of this guy; of his story, of his dance skills and of his heart! No dancer sums up focused-resilience-in-chaos better than Dharon. He’ll forever be the symbol of the positive things 2020 brought out in us. Good partner choice, Fred! .
