I WANT TO BE YOUR CANARY REPRISE, A LEGITIMATE OOC REVIEW

In December of 2016, A Stage Reborn (who are now a registered nonprofit!) began a project which has come to be, in my mind, the very embodiment of how far MMOs as a medium can be pushed for entertainment purposes.

Canary: Reprise is a first for ASR, as they are re-imagining and revisiting the performance that started it all. The sheer amount of effort that went into this production must not be understated - it’s a production defined by well-timed lighting cues, seamless furniture relocation, massive production values, fantastically creative usage of the medium and clockwork-precise timing.

I remember when the /playdead emote was first released, there was conjecture it was in part due to ASR’s usage of /doze on stage to mimic actors playing dead. I can say with absolute certainty that the significant difference this made was the least of the many changes and broad improvements A Stage Reborn brought to this show.

What most fascinates me about ASR is their capacity to make productions beyond the norm and be more than just a love letter to the Final Fantasy series. What I most looked forward to in the wake of the original production was seeing how they could take the tools at hand and create something wholly their own - not merely a tribute, but an ascension of the limits many assumed they were leashing themselves to.

When I heard their next project was a reprisal of their first, I was confused. I viewed The Worker as a fantastic step forward, and Maria and Draco as proof they could take a famous start and make something wholly their own. The grand, immense scope of the stage and reach of the production for Maria and Draco isn’t present here - but this was an inevitability tied to the production itself. Canary isn’t a grand drama about war between nations. It is, at its heart, a tragic love story.

With the original production, my biggest complaint was that the ending stuck too much to the source material and felt rushed and abrupt as a result. It was with great curiosity I awaited the Reprisal and seeing how it had changed.

I was not disappointed.

The changes, the expansions, are wonderful. There are points they feel a bit off by comparison to the rest of the script, true, and this is very much a send-up to Final Fantasy IX’s version directly rather than an original piece - but it does what the original show did with a new, phenomenal polish and plenty more to enjoy. It is, plain and simple, a straight-up across-the-board upgrade to the original show.

(Here’s a hot tip: show up at least an hour early. The production starts sooner than you think when you’re waiting outside.)

For those who saw the original, seeing this performance illustrates yet another brilliant facet of the stage - the same characters are played by actors who are by design not identical to the original roles. Indeed, they stick to the practice that it’s characteristics that make a character recognizable, and they do this quite well!

If you haven’t seen the original, or especially if you only saw it on broadcast, it’s worth seeing. If you already saw the original you absolutely should come out and see the changes, because they’re a total delight.

(My single favorite change is the simulated ATB fight that they made EVEN BETTER than before.)

Dear Yaya, I have been trying to find a small community to RP with, but Balmung is far away and abandoning my Free Company is not an option. In all honesty, I'm a bit shy when approaching others outside of my close-knit friend group, and I very very rarely see anyone set to RP status on my home server of Diabolos. Do you have any ideas? I’ve actually had a question like this in the past! Really when it comes to making a community for RP on a new server the most important thing is to make a post to gauge interest. Nothing can be accomplished until interest is established. So what I would suggest doing is making a post about RP on Diabolos, and see if you can get some interest from other people on the server. Don’t just post it on tumblr though. Places like Reddit are massive for the FFXIV community, and it will likely be more viewed that way.

However, steel yourself. You’ll get trolls, you’ll likely get told off at least once for wanting to bring roleplay to a server where roleplay isn’t as widely found. Unfortunately the ignorance of people is one of the reasons it’s a lot harder to start up these kinds of things. 

Once you’ve gathered interest try and put together a small rp event!~ It doesn’t have to be anything major, just a fun event to help show people that Roleplay is more than just ERPing in a corner for shits and giggles. In that lies your second block, a lot of people associate RP with ERP and it usually is the reason RPers are looked down upon.

Keep positive! If you take the right steps I’m sure you’ll have a small community built up in no time!
