One of my abiding memories of the dial-up era is the time I was trying to connect to the Internet at the same time my dad (who was out on the road in his job as a tour bus driver) was trying to call home. So instead of the usual handshake protocol noise, suddenly Dad's voice was coming out of the speakers saying "Hello?" as the modem had opened the connection while he was waiting for someone to pick up, and now there was an open connection, just not the kind either end was looking for!
