Botany Bay Diamond Weevil
Scientific Name: Chrysolopus spectabilis
Region: Southeastern Australia
Size: About 1" (25 mm) long
Interesting Notes: This beautiful bug resides and feeds nearly entirely on particular species of Acacia. They use the powerful mandibles on their unique snout to bore holes in plants to eat sap and make holes where they will then lay their eggs. Though it can cause harm to plants, it is harmless to humans and animals - only either clutching its present perch tightly or falling to the ground playing dead when sensing danger.
