Crab traps are putting the future of this turtle species in jeopardy. The FWC is seeking public comment on proposed changes to rule 68A-25.002, F.A.C., for diamondback terrapin in Florida. The new proposal would eliminate take of terrapins from the wild and prohibit possession except where an FWC-issued permit was authorized. This tiny tot washed ashore on the beach. I got called because it was a turtle, but this isn’t a sea turtle! This baby diamondback terrapin was safely handed off to a permitted university professor to be documented and then returned to a better-suited environment.
