I am always documenting my relationship to the environment and my daily experiences. Shape-making is a big part of my practice and making collages and drawings is how I go about creating shapes as my starting point. This process is a playful one, embracing experimentation and failure and allows me to create visual content that can ultimately feed into my paintings. I seem to think in shape and colour and these are the devices of my visual language. Says Diana of her exhibition: “It is in the quietness of the mornings with only the sound of the ocean, or of my breath that I reconnect to nature and sink into myself. This is the time when I can hear myself think and where I have most clarity. More and more I have been bringing that quietude back into the studio with me. DIANA MILLER - In the Quiet - a solo exhibition featuring a collection of contemplative meditations on the challenges faced by the world during 2021 from the quiet of her Byron Bay studio. Says Diana: “These paintings were made in response to the current world climate. With so much foreboding, I felt the need to turn inward and be in a quiet space away from the noise – and so I escaped to the quiet of the beach and to the sanctity of my studio.” Opening drinks 2-4pm Saturday 20 November. IN TRANSIT (2021) by DIANA MILLER • Acrylic on linen • 180cm H x 150cm W This piece explores Diana’s inherent love of shape-making and colour, working with organic and geometric abstraction to create her compositions. Her process is a tactile one, working with collage and ink drawings to inspire and inform her paintings. Like many of her works, this one represents a reassembling of the self – a piecing together of elements to make whole again. ‘In Transit’ makes reference to the nature of much of Diana’s life, where she has moved home time and time again, always feeling like she is in a state of transit.
