garden of trust
I don’t know if trust resembles a beautiful rose, or a dangerous sword.
With every word you say, I find myself falling deeper inside this rabbit hole. A hole that I long have close and lock, a cliff that left me as numb as rock. I don’t know if it’s a good decision for me to take out my beating heart once again, and let it feel things it should have forgotten.
I just don't know, if I should take this chance again.
“Are you more likable now or were you more likable 10 years ago? Explain why you answered the way you did.”
I think I was more likable 10 years ago—but I like me better now.
When I was younger, I wasn’t the best at establishing boundaries and holding people to them. I was agreeable because I didn’t want to call attention to myself by having opinions that differed too strongly from those of the people around me, by being too outspoken. It was easy to steamroll me without meaning to, because I allowed it even when I knew I shouldn’t have. I don’t think most people abused my disposition all that much (at least, not when I was 21), and they just found me friendly and likable instead of ingratiating and self-minimizing, which is how I see it looking back now.
Now I have more confidence in the idea that I deserve to occupy a space and have my own thoughts. I’m better at establishing boundaries and making sure people respect them, and I voice my opinions on whatever the topic is that I have an opinion about. Even though being more adamant about these things probably makes people less likely to find me likable, I think the people who do like me for the person I am and who stick around to be friends with that person respect me more and appreciate me more for it. I am okay with being less generally likable if the trade-off is having more genuine relationships with the people who accept who I am—boundaries, opinions, and all.

“…Today finally happened. My first successful hunt!We had ventured to hunt outside the walls, as per usual. The border forests and lands yield better results than within the range of the petricide forest around any settlement of the kingdom.
We had travelled towards the Greenfang Mountains, a small mountain range between Jandelle and Old Bargate. Between the two mountain ranges lies a path that is often frequented by travelling merchants, that venture East to the neutral lands and beyond. On one of our past hunts we heard tavern tales of a beast making the area its home, preying on the merchants that pass through there. Frey considered it a suitable target for us to pursue.
Hours passed until we finally tracked it down. I still do not know what it was. It definitely was different from any native creatures. Scales covering limbs and chest, claws as sharp as daggers. Teeth more jagged than any Silverwing I have ever seen. Reptile? Mammal? I do not know, nor do I care much any longer. It attacked us almost immediately. But we proved quicker than it, easily evading the sweeps from the claws that tried to grab us. Several bolts were shot, but the scales were preventing them to wound it.
But then I saw it, the opening we needed. It had scales on the outside, but not the inside. I separated from Frey, drawing its attention to focus on me. I still hear her cursing me for doing something so foolish. My plan worked and it turned to me, lunging and swiping at me. I tumbled aside and when it thought it cornered me, it opened its mouth to bite at me.That’s what I waited for! Instantly I shot three bolts at it. One missed and the second hit a set of scales of its chest. But the third! Oh it hit the mark and inside the beast’s mouth! I think it even partially came out through the back of its head! Blood everywhere, dying my leather suit crimson. But within seconds the beast dropped dead at my feet.
So this is what it feels like to have success in the hunt. To kill with your own hands and by yourself. The rush of violence and ecstasy of the kill. I still tremble in euphoria. Tomorrow we hunt again, I can not wait!I will relive this moment again and again. Until nothing remains! They shall fear me, as I once feared them! And I shall relish in every spilled drop of their blood. Nothing shall halt me, nor dissuade me from my goals!…“

Dear Diary | Accepting
My head’s been hurting a lot lately. Usually that’s normal enough, and it goes away once I put my helmet on and ‘lock in’ or whatever it’s called, but sometimes I can end up wearing it for hours. I’ll forget to eat or sleep, and really it’s no good to work so obsessively without rest anyway. But I can’t help it. I lose track of time. I lose track of everything. It’s like being in a lucid dream.
Then I’ll take it off and the pain comes back. I feel all my other senses again and it hurts. I told Master today about it. I’d been putting it off because I didn’t want to trouble him. He said he’d have a look at me and told me to get some rest first. That’s probably my problem. I’m doing too much dreaming and not enough sleeping.
I don’t really like sleeping anymore, though. It feels even lonelier than it used to, back then. Even though I’m not lonely. I have Master Viktor, and the other acolytes, and my work to keep me in busy company. There’s plenty of noise. There’s always something to do. I don’t like sitting still for too long on my own. And that’s what laying in bed sleeping is; sitting still for too long.
I start thinking and remembering, and my head hurts. I don’t want to think about the past anymore. I don’t want to forget, but I don’t want to remember so much either.
Does Master Viktor have a similar problem? He sometimes falls asleep at his desk. Maybe he doesn’t like to be alone and still for too long either. Maybe that’s what happens when someone becomes like this? I don’t want to say less human, but what else can we call it? Master calls it ‘perfection’. I can hardly argue. I’m better in nearly every way. I’m more powerful than I could have ever been when I was fully flesh, even before my illness.
Are we losing something along the way, though? Or are we gaining new problems? I don’t know how to ask. I don’t feel knowledgeable enough. He’s so smart, I might irritate him with stupid questions. He’s so kind, though. Master is so kind.
If I lay here and try to focus on that kindness, maybe the headache will go away and I can sleep. I can smell steamy milk down the hall. Star anise powder. The shake-shake of the bottle is fascinating. I’ll think about that. I’ll ignore the drilling sound that’s sure to come later.

Diary Entry Prompt ~

1st Entry
“Mondatta knows, I am certain of it. I have spoken little of the desire to leave this place, the temple, the grounds, this country - and yet, when I notice him look at me, I know.
It is no mere coincidence that I expressed an avid interest in his excursions, the crowds he often travels far and wide to address in person. There may have been a time when I agreed with him, the methods he chooses to spread the message of peace, it would have been wonderful to accompany him, but…he has always believed my place is here, that I would better serve the cause by remaining at the monastery, tending to the travelers who come here seeking their own enlightenment.
I do not believe he is correct in his assumption. I have voiced as much, many times, and just as many times he finds new ways to make me question my ideas. We are not so different, he and I, and I find neither contempt nor condescension in his words. But I cannot deny that I am saddened, that I feel his sense of where I should be, is clouded by a selfishness even he does not quite understand. How to address the issue is unclear to me, I don’t wish him any more ill than he does myself. I feel it too. Perhaps this was why he was so quick to encourage I begin taking students of my own. It is food for thought.”
2nd Entry
“I had hoped breaking the news to my brothers would go far better than it did. It appears that no matter how quiet I wished to make this transition, they could not simply allow me to just slip away before dawn. Many of them visited this night passed, each with a reason they believed I should remain. I wonder if they realize how alike they sound, how attuned. Mondatta should be proud of them.
Incidentally, he saved his visit until the small hours of the morning. We talked at length, he tried, but in the end all we could agree on was that I need to do what I believe is best. I am in no doubt I am doing what is right, and while the future is not preordained, I feel the warmth of the iris within me. The farewell was troublesome, emotional, but I could not allow myself to show either, I fear it would have broken us both.
But this is not the end, we may yet meet again - I hope that we cross paths, I do - and by then I hope to have many successful stories to tell.”
Dear Diary
There was a time when keeping a diary was an every-day occurrence. Young girls, yes, it was always girls, were given journals in which to record personal thoughts, wishes and dreams. They were encouraged to write anything that came to mind, even the most personal thoughts. Then, years later, many of these diaries were discovered, some by famous individuals. Imagine reading the…
