DIARY ENTRY NO. 2
Since I have so much free time nowadays, I have been attempting to at least spend some parts of it doing something productive. Aside from the many hours of browsing TikTok and watching really dumb Netflix films, I’ve been trying to learn how to skateboard.
When I say skateboard, I mean cruise around, not land kickflips or pop ollies. This is actually my second time of trying to skate—I bought myself an oversized, off-market Penny Board in seventh grade and although I had “tried” back then, I thought it was scary so I quit. Turning eighteen this summer, I feel like I finally have the guts to stand on a piece of plastic with wheels.
I notice that I usually get the hang of doing things quickly when I have a large amount of willpower to do them. Same goes for riding a bike. Of course I had no problem riding with training wheels when I was little, but when my dad thought it’d be a good idea to teach me to ride by taking off ONE training wheel and leaving the other one on, I immediately refused to ride a bike. In fifth grade, I told my mom one day that I was going to learn how to ride a bike… fifteen minutes into getting a new bike, I rode it like I had been doing it all of my life.
Soooooooo…… yeah. A good twenty minutes into pulling out the skateboard, I’m cruising :-)
I feel like I sounded kind of self-glorified right there—oops! I’m just super proud of myself is all. I have decided to dedicate a least half an hour a day to skateboarding so that I don’t lose my beginner’s touch. By the time quarantine is over, I can envision myself as being a pretty decent skater kid (a little fuzzy at the edges, but I can kind of see it).
Funny enough, I brought up learning how to skateboard to my friends and it turns out that my friends are also learning how to skate (roller skating). I guess quarantine is making us all want to learn a new skill or two. I am currently making plans to meet up with two friends and learn how to skate with them (6 feet away and with masks of course!). If we can’t go on weekend drives, we might as well hang out in an abandoned parking lot and watch the sunset as we play YA novel type music.
