The problem is, I don’t ship Dracula/Mina in general and really hate Dracula/Mina from Coppola’s Dracula specifically... so the best thing I can offer you is a very silly early 00′s Russian pop song Восточные сказки (Oriental Fairytales) by Arash and Blestyaschieye, because the only way I can stomach this movie is by not treating it seriously:

Is "I never knew a wolf could cry" a reference to Company of Wolves? If so, holy fuck yes. Also, I've used "actually evil not high school evil" so many times to explain my type of villain that is actually insulting. I always loved villain x heroine ships and most of the fandom are not willing to go full dark and ship a real asshole who will never be redeemed or/and be loved by the protagonist. So I was wondering, did you had any ships like that, the "actually evil" kind?

It sure is! Just rewatched it last night in fact.

In terms of “actually evil not high school evil” ships you usually have to go into more horror stuff to find actual ones. Something like Thomasin/Black Phillip from the Witch, Hannibal/Clarice, Daniel (Candyman)/Helen in Candyman. I didn’t really like the Gr*shaverse books but I like the Darkling and Alina and it could have been a good corruption arc if the books were less boring, vanilla YA. Vampire fiction is full of it: Michael/David in The Lost Boys, Dracula/Mina (outside of the 92 version which is just... different), etc.

Also “everybody goes full dark” au’s are fun, especially in stories where you can’t do it cause it would kind of ruin the point or flow of the story (ex: the dark side of the force isn’t as cool in universe as it is aesthetic wise). Which is the exact influence from The Wish episode of Buffy probably but it is what it is. And those are good for almost all other ships: Star Wars (Reylo, Trilla/Cal OR Merrin, Revan/Bastilla, Ventress/Vos), Buffy/Angeles OR Spike OR Faith, a dark Vaness/Ethan from Penny Dreadful

There’s probably more but that’s all I can think of right now.

I saw your post on The Juror and I felt so understood T_T How come no one knows this movie? It's the perfect balance of villain x heroine. It was tagged a thriller AND romance for a while on imdb. Have you read the book? There is some juicy stuff there as well.

Hello hello I just saw this ask! It's a great tale of fucked-up tenderness, with a lot of emotional questions left unanswered. In the Fucked-Up Tenderness regard, there are a fair amount of parallels with Collateral (2004) - which contributed a lot toward making me scream aloud more than once while watching The Juror.

I've read some of the excerpts from the book that you've posted, actually! I haven't read the book itself - I'm not sure how I'd approach The Juror/The Teacher outside of canon, because I think the film handled it perfectly. I am still thinking a lot about this, though, especially in light of the Teacher's about-face toward Louis Boffano. What do you love about the book?

Just wanted to say your blog is giving me life! I've started season 2 expecting that K*rista and Dinah would share domain over two different sides of Russo: Jigsaw and amnesia!Billy. K*rista would try to redeem him while Dinah tried to prove he was still the same Billy even if he had lost his memory. When K*rista became his accomplice, it was more complex than "bitch was evil and enjoyed killing", but I still felt robbed.

[2] I'd trade the ending we got any day for Dinah awakening the worst in herself by trying to awaken the worst in Russo. She starts the season in a dark place, while Russo is walking away from the mess he made because he doesn't remember. But then again, was it right to deny redemption to someone? She would be his connection to his past and she could not forget hers while he breathed. I don't understand why wasn't he so obsessed with her as she was with him. Do you have any metas on that?

Ayways, I totally agree with you! It would've been awesome to have Dinah become her worst while trying to make Billy see how evil he truly is. Such a wasted storyline. I'm bias to talk about Kr*sta, I think the writers really screwed up with them. Maybe if it happened like you said, the it would mean something. But, how it was portrayed, her scenes with Billy just don't have the same emotional impact of Billy and Dinah.

About Billy not being obsessed with Dinah, I wish I had some kind of answer/insight that would make sense of his behaviour, but I'm at lost. The antis will say it's because he "never really cared about Dinah/was using her", but even if that were true, the Billy we knew in s01 would never be satisfied until he knew the whole truth, he would stalk Dinah until he knew everything that made her tick. Even with the amnesia, I don't really buy the changes because he might not have been a traitor then, but he was still a soldier and an abused kid that grew up on foster care. No way that a guy with that background would just let Dinah walk away when she hates him so much. It makes absolute no sense!

So yeah, that's my meta, it doesn't make sense. Sorry I couldn't give an answer that fits with the canon of s02, lol.

In my opinion, Fuchsia rejected Steerpike in the red room because the scar scared her, but to the audience it was suppose to be a symbolic moment in which Steerpike reveals his true self beneath the romantic luring for Fuchsia and she is shocked by it. It's not about the physical scar, but the inner ugliness he hides, which is why, after she learns the whole truth about him, he says his ugliness doesn't matter anymore because he can see she still loves him

I agree that on one level it’s symbolic, in the book there are symbolic aspects of her rejection too, for example Steerpike extinguishing Fuchsia’s candle. But I think part of the issue with reframing the break up around his outward ugliness is that there’s no real link to his inner ugliness in that scene. How symbolic can it be for the audience when it’s so literal, emotionally speaking, for Fuchsia?

 It’s also a bit more thematically confused to me because rather than Steerpike letting his metaphorical mask slip and spoiling the fantasy, in this Fuchsia begs him to.... well, take off the literal mask. It almost frames her as unreasonable and wrong for not being able to accept what is behind the mask, because it feels so literally about his outward ugliness.
