F-18 shadow on a KC-10
I taught myself word processing on an Apple II when I was six or seven years old. My mom was a journalist for 33 years, so she had one at home for work. Nobody suggested I do this, I was just impelled. Consequently, to this day, and I'll be 38 in a couple of months, I type like an absolute psychopath. I hunt-and-peck and double tap the Caps Lock key instead of using Shift. I clock an eminently respectable WPM. But if you pay close attention to me at a keyboard you will take Sanity damage à la Call of Cthulhu.
I have no idea why I write, and write, and write. Even before there was an internet with cool people to communicate with on the Information Superhighway. I suspect, and this is going to sound a bit dark, that regardless of whatever encouraging messaging I was supposed to be receiving otherwise, I internalized that I was to be Seen and Not Heard. That this prerogative was, if not ideal, at least the safest course of action. In the domains of my life governed by adults and the presence of my school peers, I.E. most of them, there were few forms of communication that could be counted on not to backfire. I was encouraged to be expressive and forthcoming, but every move only seemed to worsen my position. Eventually, anything I said could and would be held against me by a bully, or worse, a doctor.
I decided that if nobody cared to listen in good faith, I would save my breath, so to speak, for the printed page, all substantive and meaningful talk for Web 1.0. Livejournal was a genuine revelation for me as a preteen, and offered my first real sense of genuine digital community.
To be honest, I'm not sure what I'd do if Tumblr went down. Find another platform, I'm sure. But I'm pretty partial to this one!
NAOMI KLEIN to SAM ALTMAN:
"...you ingested the entire written output of human civilization without consent, without compensation and without credit to build a system whose primary commercial application is eliminating the jobs of the people whose work you consumed.
You are not 'liberating human creativity' -- you are strip-mining it and selling it back at a markup while calling the theft 'training data'."

In 1984, software called Family BASIC was released for the Famicom in Japan, which allowed the console to be programmed using the BASIC programming language via a keyboard connected to a controller port.
Various magazines published source code for original games, many of which featured Mario due to him being one of the included sample graphics. Here is an illustration for a type-in game called "Evil Castle" from a 1988 issue of the micomBASIC magazine.

The amount of times I’ve read scenes in explicit fics and thought “they would not say that shit”
despite their natural inclination to don't care, warthogs have overcome apathy and found a new purpose in violent conflict
sometimes i have strong opinions but they're also so inane that halfway through writing a post i'll be like "yeah, this is Absolutely not worth the energy it's taking" and delete everything. but then the opinion is still in my head. and i still want to share it. so within five minutes i go "you know, i bet i can phrase it more succinctly this time" and anyway. you all see where this is going. sometimes i do this four times in a row before i give up on the specific inane opinion and instead write a vague post about the concept of opinions as if that'll satisfy the urge to post the entirety of my inner monologue online. may or may not be relevant to what you're reading right now. and now all our lives have been enriched. you're welcome
