Cinematic Icons: Dick Miller and Robby the Robot
Star Trek The Next Generation "The Big Goodbye"
The great Dick Miller. I'm not sure that he has a cinematic equivalent today. It's really hard to name a contemporary character actor, Tinseltown endlessly churning out a stream of blink-and-you'll-miss-'em Next Big Things, many second, third, and maybe even fourth generation Hollywood royalty. Even if it existed, a B-movie in the current wildly overblown budget landscape would cost, what, maybe fifty million dollars? Cult actors are departing this mortal coil, having no heirs. Miller was likely the last of his kind, that recognizable, rank and file performer with the hawkish features, Bronx accent, and street-tough aura who became this instant indicator that you're watching something off-beat and eccentric.
