This is the perennial Dictamnus albus (burning bush, candle plant, dittany, fire plant, fraxinella, gas plant, spitfire plant) which has white flowers but there is also a purple flowered form Dictamnus albus var. purpureus. It has highly aromatic, dark green leaves and the whole plant becomes covered in a volatile oil which can be ignited resulting in a flash of flame in hot weather.

The upright perennial Dictamnus albus (burning bush, candle plant, dittany, fire plant, fraxinella, gas plant, spitfire plant) is flowering. The divided leaves are highly aromatic, some people describe them as smelling of lemons. This slow growing plant is covered with oils which can cause skin irritation in sunlight.

The erect stems of Dictamnus albus (dittany, burning bush) are clothed in aromatic leaves full of volatile oils with a fragrant, lemony aroma. This herbaceous perennial is slow growing but will tolerate dry growing conditions once established and produces spikes of white lily-shaped flowers. It is best to wear gloves when handling as contact with the plant may cause photodermatitis (skin rashes in sunlight).

Dictamnus albus is in the citrus family Rutaceae. Commonly known as gas plant or burning bush, it is native to Eurasia, but is commonly grown as an ornamental. Gas plant is an herbaceous perennial that can grow between 3 and 4 feet tall, and does best when planted in the sun. While the flowers alone make this plant intriguing, it also produces highly volatile fragrant oils on the leaves and stems which have a citrus like smell. These oils are highly flammable; with the strike of a match, the whole plant can burst into flames. However, the oils combust and burn away completely, leaving the burning bush unscathed.
