It was never Multiple [Personality Disorder].
It was always [Multiple Personality] Disorder.
In 1994 the American Psychiatric Association changed the name of Multiple Personality Disorder to Dissociative Identity Disorder with the release of the DSM-IV.
I have seen many people say that this change was made because the disorder used to be a personality disorder, but experts learned more about the disorder and re-categorized it as a dissociative disorder.
From the earliest history of the disorder, multiple personality disorder was understood as a dissociative disorder. Personality disorders are not only in a different section of the DSM, they are in an entirely different diagnostic Axis.
Although many laymen misunderstood MPD and mistakenly thought that it was a personality disorder, mental health professionals who treated people with the disorder absolutely did not.
It’s true that our understanding of DID has improved greatly since the 90s, but it’s not true that MPD was ever considered by professionals to be a personality disorder.
